Donna - Have symptoms of the polio reocurred? I'm a worried mess with my nigerian dwarf now. I'm not sure how worried I need to be that the polio will come back. This is a very weird illness to deal with.

Before Christmas I went through polio with my pygmy. We thought we were going to lose him, he couldn't walk, he was blind. We only had the B complex so we used it round the clock every 4 hrs for 2 days then Maggie had us do it every 6
hrs then 8 hrs then twice a day for another week. We also got him up 3-4 times a day and massaged his legs. We didn't see any improvement for a few days but we stayed with it and did eveything Maggie said and he pulled through it. He's completely normal. We were so happy and grateful for all the help we received through this forum. Good Luck!

I'm nearing the end of dealing with polio. My goat is about 90% back to normal so far. Don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate signs. I didn't really for about 1 1/2 - 2 days. He may have already had it for 1-2 days and thats why it took him a while. If she starts screaming Maggie said it is because they probably have a headache from swelling in the brain. I gave 1cc/10lb of Children's Motrin every 4-6 hours. That seemed to calm him quite a bit. Also, my little guy Jett couldn't see either. I was worried about permanent damage because he was blind for longer than normal. It was almost 4-5 days before I could tell that he was seeing better. I just really made sure to still with the scheduled shots.

Get the regular B from the feed store. If you are using the regular formula (has 12.5 mg/ml of thiamin, vitamin B1, check the label) you need to give 1 cc per 3 pounds every 4 to 6 hours for the first 24 hours then 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 7 more days. If you have the FORTIFIED B Complex (has 100 mg/ml thiamin) you can give 1 cc per 20 pounds on the same schedule. If the B is what she needs you have to get it into her as quick as possible. If Polio is what she has right now then you may see improvement an hour after the first shot. The Vitimin B does no harm is passed right through. Make 3 or 4 smaller shots in several places, since you have to give so much of the regular B. See the 911 listing "Goat with blood in mouth" That was my goat with polio, and everyone helped me through it. She was fine after 24 hours. But keep giving the shots 2-3 times a day, for the next week. By then you should have the stronger stuff. After a a few days she will recognize a needle and hide. You may need help holding her as she gets better. But keep up the shots so she can recover completely.

Ok, well i went to 3 different feed stores and no Fortified B Complex - but i ordered some - however i don't think it will be here soon enough :-( She is not doing so well, last night when she was walking around she would lean her head on things like the wall, or fridge, or us, and it almost seems like she is kinda blind ? And now this morning she is down again, she is just not looking so good, i wasn't sure that she would make it through the night.

Oh, another thing she does is curls her lip up - pretty consistantly, almost like she does it when she breaths. Her temp last night was 100.2 as well - i was running late to work today and didn't get a chance to take it this am.

I just thought of something, maybe i can try calling a vet to see if they have some Fortified B Complex - the only thing is that it will have to wait untill i get off of work - and that still may be too late - i did some reading on goat polio, and it sounds like that could be it possibly, do you think if i got the Fortified B Complex ( or thiamin) afterwork and gave it too her it could still work, or is she too far gone ? I will try it either way, but does anybody have experiance with it ?

Again, thank you all.

Chrystyna~

They often have the Fortified B Complex but sometimes they only have the regular B Complex. If you can only get the regular formula you have to give a much bigger dose, as close as you can get to 1 cc per 3 pounds (I know that's alot), inject her at several different sites SQ rather than one big shot. B complex is also an appetite stimulant and helps heal the damaged gut, as well as promoting good nerve function. Don't worry about overdosing, any excess is eliminated in teh urine (it may also make her want to pee). If she is not drinking well you may have to start drenching her with a pint of water at the time for a total of about a gallon a day.

Maggie - do they sell the Fortified B Complex at the feed store ?

She can get up and down - slowly, but she can, and she does, and she walks around ok, again just slow and dazed - the only time she not "dazed" is when i'm interacting with her, or handfeeding her something.

Thanks~

The worms are nearly microscopic and don't cause a blockage like with small animals and horses. She won't poop much if she's not eating much. She won't pee much if she is not drinking much.

The dazed thing has me thinking you are looking at polio brought on by her parasite load and her being off feed. Do you have Fortified B Complex injectable? If so give 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection every 4 hours for the first 24 hours then 2 to 3 times a day for another 7 days. Give the probios to replenish her depleted intestinal microbes (you can substitute a couple fo tablespoons of yogurt if you don't have probios).

Can she get up? You need to stand her several times a day to stretch out her legs and prevent the muscles from permanently atrophying.

Take her temp, she could be developing pneumonia, a common complication in a downer goat.

This is an update from the down goat post ( in case some don't know ) I just got off the phone with the hubby ( 1:15pm ) and he said still no pee or poop - so that means the last time she went was around 7:30-8:00pm last night - what could this be about ?

Could it be from my worming of ivermectin yesterday afternoon and worms causeing an impaction - but would she still urinate ? Or are her organs failing ? Anybody ????? :-(
Thanks~
