They should suck within 30 minutes or so, certainly within and hour. The heat lamp is doing NOTHING (heat rises). Heat lamps just aren't effective in an open space. Check their temps or just stick your finger in their mouth, if the temp is 100 or below or if the mouth is cool they are too cold to want to suck or to even be able to suck much. Get them inside, put their bodies into plastic bags up to their necks and into a sink of very warm water (hold their heads above the water the entire time) until the temp is at least 100. Blow them dry. Bottle feed or tube feed them colostrum and a couple of ccs of nutridrench. After warming up and getting a meal they should be able to rejoin their dam, but watch them very closely to be sure they are feeding every 20 minutes or so. Their blood sugar is low too, they need the energy and the antibodies from the colostrum. After about 6 hours the colostrum isn't absorbed very well. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

GOT THREE NEW BABIES! WILL TAKE ADVICE. ALREADY HAVE THEM UNDER HEAT LAMP, ABOUT THREE FEET OVER THERE HEAD. BUT THEY HAVEN'T SUCKED YET. HOW LONG SHOULD I WEIGHT BEFORE I DO SOMETHING? SHOULD I TRY TO GET MILK FROM MAMA OR SHOULD I GIVE THEM A DOSE OF DRENCH TO LIVEN THEM UP? OR BOTH??? PLEASE RESPOND A.S.A.P. THANKS!!! |
