You do need to get him up to exercise and stretch and massage his legs several times a day. Do it for him if you have to, drape him across a hay bale or pillows or put him in a body sling. A goat that is down for even just a day or two starts to atrophy the leg muscles and the tendons and ligaments permanently shorten, making it so they can never get up again. Goats that are down do not breathe deeply and are very prone to pneumonia. You might try giving more thiamin or decreasing the interval between injections. His recovery will hinge on how much brain and nerve damage there has been and whether he can heal from it.

I'm still concerned he's still not walking or able to stand. Is there anything else we can do or do we just have to wait this out?

Things are looking better. He's eating hay, water and yogurt. He's peeing and pooping. Just not standing yet. Now we don't have to hold him the whole time, he's been laying in the bed we made for him.

Maggie, he made it through the night thank god. This morning he drank a little but probably not enough so we drenched him with water and some yogurt. We'll do it again after Thankgiving dinner and tonight. Do you think that is enough? We almost went away for the holiday, thank god we didn't. The family is taking turns holding him, he seems to like that. These goats are like our children. How long is it before he can stand up on his own?

The teeth grinding is a sign of pain. My wether does that during episodes of polio. Like I said he may have a huge headache, polio causes the brain tissue to swell. Drinking is a good sign, he will be able to keep himself hydrated. I'll be away most of tomorrow but I'll try to check in tomorrow night.

Is the hernia soft or hard? Can you push it back in? If it is hard it could be an abscess. Is it painful? Most hernias aren't painful hot or hard. It may be strangulated and if so there isn't much you can do except euthanasia.

Every 6 hours for the first 24 hours or so, then 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 7 more days. Do you have banamine or Liquid CHildren's Motrin? You might try that for pain. Banamine at 0.1 cc per 10 pounds, Motrin Liquid at 1 cc per 10 pounds.

We've done all we can for tonight. My husband is holding the goat because when we put him down he screams. I know you said give the vitamin B and then give it again in 4 hours. Then every 6 hours for how long? I'll let you know tommorrow how he is.
