Being down and unwilling to get up may have also been pregnancy toxemia. This is treated by giving CMPK (a calcium and mineral supplement) and propylene glycol (an easily digested sugar). Here is a good article on toxemia also called milk fever or hypocalcemia: http://kinne.net/hypocal2.htm Pasture breeding puts you at a great disadvantage, you have NO IDEA when a doe is due or even if she is pregnant. Knowing what stage of pregnancy they are in can help with a diagnosis. Temperature is taken rectally, a digital thermometer works great but any thermometer will work. A thermometer is your MOST IMPORTANT diagnostic tool, get one! Please read up on how to help a doe if she has trouble getting the kid out, how to tube feed a kid and how to hand milk. Most kiddings go well, but you don't have time to stand around waiting for a vet if you have a doe or kids in trouble. There is info on the Articles page about tube feeding, Jeffer's Supply carries a puppy stomach tube that is perfect for pygmies. I have an article about hand milking on my website at www.maggidans.com. Unfortunately breeding is not for the faint of heart, but it can be wonderful! Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

She was able to eat without fighting for the food. But I do not know how to check for bloat nor checking a temp. I just thought that she was getting ready to kid, it would have been her first time so I did not think about her being sick. Just thought it was due to her kidding. We did try to save her kids but they were not ready and died soon after birth. I am so scared to lose anymore of my babies. I have a total of 32 Bucks & Does.I can not stand to lose anyone else. Thank you Maggie. |

Diarrhea is not a symptom of bloat, they may get diarrhea AFTER an episode of bloat but not very often during it. If she was bloated for 6 hours from noon until 6 when the vet came that may be what caused the problem. Bloat can be a sign of enterotoxemia. Bloat that lasts much more than an hour can cause the digestive system to shut down and enterotoxemia to develop. Entero can kill very fast and will certainly make a goat go down. Did you do anything when she wouldn't get up? Take her temp, check for bloat, try to make her get up? Had you changed her diet when you penned her up like given more grain or different hay? It is also possible this was just a random "thing" that happens, bloat and even entero often is. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Yesterday I had went out ot check on a pregnant pygmy doe that I thought would kid soon. I penned her up a couple nights ago. When I went to check on her yesterday morning she was fine. Yesterday around noon I checked on her again and she was laying down did not get up when I went in the barn. So I called my vet. She was busy and could not get her til around 6 or so. She went to the barn and told me that she was de-hydrated, so we were getting ready to start an IV. We were holding her head to put it in her neck, then she just died before we got done anything. The vet asked if I wanted to try to save the babies and I said yes. Well when she opened her up for an emergency C-Section she found that she was bloated. When I seen her at noon she had no signs of diarrhea. But then when the vet was there she had basically water coming out. What could I have done to spare my very loved goat from all this? I am so worried because I have other pygmys that are pregnant. I miss my girl. Your advice is very appreciated. |
