With the probability of worms and maybe coccidia, and not eating, and having had diarrhea he may now have goat polio. The digestive microbes that normally make B1 (thiamin) have been very disturbed. Give Fortified B Complex at 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection every 6 hours (you can give at every 4 hours if necessary). and water in case he is acidotic. Also drench with about 1 to 2 tablespoons baking soda dissolved in water. Also check the color of his lower inner eyelids, if they are very pale or white he is very anemic, and this can cause great weakness to the point of not being able to get up. Injectable iron (Ferrodex) is the best way to boost iron, but you can also give Geritol (the adult dose) or RedCell (half the horse dose) or Goat Nutridrench, once he is feeling a bit better (able to stand acting more normal). BTW can you get a temp? Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Help, we went to check on the goat and he fell over and he can't get up. We bought him in the house where it is warm, I don't know if we should have, its 30 out and 65 inside. We don't know what to do. Please help quick! Or call 607-336-8753. |

A couple of tablespoons is plenty. Mix it with just a little water to thin it some and use a turkey baster, drench gun, or big syringe. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

You have to give the yogurt like a drench, they won't take it on their own. It is a good replacement for probiotics. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Maggie, we started treatment this morning and so far so good. He didn't seem to have any diarrihea today. He isn't really eating but I offered him warm water and he did drink some. I will be home the next 5 days so I'll be able to watch him closer and offer warm water more often. What is probiotics? I think I have seen it. Does it come in a big tube? I'll look tommorrow. I don't think he'll take yogurt because he's not on milk. I'll keep you posted. Thanks. |

Safeguard IS NOT effective for worms. The Sulmet you have mixed up will work fine. Pygmies are like any other goat and come into heat every 18 to 22 days or so. Pygmies are bred at 15 to 18 months old for the first time. Since you don't know if the diarrhea is from worms or coccidia treat for both, he doesn't have any time to lose. When worms or coccidia get bad enough to cause diarrhea the goat is getting close to death. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thank you Maggie. When I got him a few weeks ago they said they treated with safeguard for worms. I treated for coccidia when we got him because you told me it was a good idea. Should I do it again? The sulmet i have was in powder form when I got it, you told me how much water to add. I still have it in the refrigarator. Would it be okay to use? How often does a pygmy come into heat? We also have a yearling who we would like to bred in January. I will give the ivermectin. I will give the sulmet when I hear from you. Thanks again. |

Pepto ONLY treats the symptom it doesn't treat the cause. I would say he has coccidia and worms. You can treat for both at the same time. Give Albon or Sulmet 12.5% Drinking Water solution full strength at 1 cc per 5 pounds orally once a day for 5 days. Give Ivermectin Injectable for Cattle at 1 cc per 25 pounds orally once a day for 2 days repeat in 2 weeks. Give a probiotic daily during treatment to replenish lost digestive microbes. The distended abdomen is from intestinal and stomach parasites, just like with wormy puppies and kittens. If he is eating he is NOT bloated. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Hi Maggie, our 16 week old buck pygmy has had some diarrihea for a few days. I gave him pepto for two days and he still has it. I took temp. and its 102.3. We have had him only a month and he also seems to be bloated because he's fat on both sides. Otherwise he seems fine. Any suggestions would be great. |
