Just want to add that grain overload can easily cause a painful death to the goat and a big disapointment to the caring owner. I use 55 gal barrels to store my corn, feed and minerals. Keeps the goats safely out and the feed fresh and dry. Also any rodents cannot get to it. Must keep a lid on them because goats can jump. And also set the barrel on something like flat 2x4 boards to keep bottom from rusting and reduce condensation on the inside. |

Since they have made it this long they will probably be fine. Give a probiotic or yogurt to replenish th edigestive microbes. Feed only hay for a week or so then maybe start them back on very small quantities of grain. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

After I got a response yesterday, I went and picked up some Milk of Magnegia. I administered 5cc per goat.(2 goats). Then I gave them 5cc each of Probios. Then I mixed up an electrolyte solution of water, honey, salt, and baking soda and manually administered that by syringe. Is there anything else I can do for them now besides wait?? |

They probably have a touch of enterotoxemia, and a colossal bellyache. Eating right now isn't all that important, clearing out the gut and staying hydrated is. Give Milk of Magnesia to help clear out the gut and neutralize some of the toxins. Do not try to stop the diarrhea, it is the goat's body trying to cleanse itself of the toxins. Give pencillin instead of LA 200, give a dose orally and give twice a day as a SQ injection for 3 or 4 more days. The dose is 1 cc per 20 pounds. Give a probiotic daily (or 1 tablespoon of yogurt with active cultures) to get the intestinal microbes going again. No grain for the next week or so and the grass hay is better right now than alfalfa. ANYTIME your goats get into a grain product (or dogfood, or bird seed, etc.) and eat more than they should start Milk of Magnesia immediately, giving CD Antitoxin (this is NOT the vaccine, it is used to TREAT enterotoxemia) is also a good idea. This is EXACTLY the scenerio that causes enterotoxemia (also called Overeating Disease). It is often fatal very quickly. Lock up the corn where they can't get it. They will surely try again. I have two pet nubian/pygmy cross goats. 7 mo. old. They got into some corn the other day and yesterday they had really runny yellow diarrhea. Both very lathargic, not wanting to eat anything. Yesterday I gave them a shot of LA-200 (antibiotic). This morning I gave 60cc a peice of yogart. Both lying down all day and have no interest in food. I've seen both drinking, but for extra measure I have used a syringe to manually give them 30cc of water every half hour. The vet I talked to said hydration was the most important thing. I want to know if this is something more serious than them over-eating some corn. I've got them in a clean pen with clean hay and some alfalfa to see if they'll eat. My little girl is picking through the hay, but my boy won't eat at all. Please help. Thank you. |
