I put my girls in waiting in separate pens next to each other so the mom will be close to all the kids they have and can work them and keep them warm. Barbara Howard Capri-Medic jamesa@mrtc.com 606-522-3388 KY

i've had a few babies born in winter. they us}}ually are born during the day. but you can't count on that. my doe dropped one in one spot and another in another spot. the 1st one didn't make it. march in tennessee. cold and damp. the other time, one of my does had her kids in the middle of a snow storm, in jan. and it was very cold. i brought the kids into the basement in a basket and they stayed there for a few days, til it warmed up. we would bring the mom to the babies to nurse and then put them back in the basket, and they wouldn't move til they saw mamma again. i've had others born on cold days and so at night penned them up, with lots of hay, and everyone was toasty in the morning. if i knew i was having winter babies again, i would definitely pen my doe up, so she couldn't have them all over the place in the middle of the night. put down lots of hay or straw to keep warm. if she doesn't want to be alone, put a buddy in with her. |

Just how smart are they? We are having our babies in January... If we put a heat lamp out during the night do you think they would have their babies near the heat? I am going to get a plug in baby monitor this weekend to leave outside to wake me incase one has one inbetween my cold nightly checks. Do you think every 3-4 hours would be sufficient to check if I have the monitor out there as well? I would hate to wake up and find a frozen baby-I would feel just terrible. I've seen them bred on different dates and can tell they are pregnant but now I'm not sure which dates took. Needless to say-it's going to be a long winter... Anyone have any suggestions. I guess I could just pen up the ones that are coming due at night with the heat lamp but then I'd be afraid they would get restless alone and start butting stuff and stressing. Thanks! Cindy
