just had to post on how hard it was for me to get rid of pinkeye in my goats. Well one that had it first. 7 days of cleaning eye ointment and la 2000. still cloudy and weepy. 1 week of drops only thought she was clear. then started getting cloudy again 3 more days of penicillin finly started to clear. We started this Oct. 28th and just this weeked her eyes have cleared What a battle. She is able to see and doing great. The ones that followed (in a seperate pen 200 feet away)cought them in the weepy stage no clouding and 3 days of penicillin they have been clear. Seems like the warm eye wash of epson salt seems to be the big helper in soothing the eyes. just never give up and early detection seems to be the thing! |

Oh, very good! Yep just a slip of the fingers a fading of the brain cells, I understand. Great that ou have eye ointment too. If she struggles too much about the eye ointment, let the injection work for a day or so and then try again. Her eyes will be very painful to touch. I could always tell the treatment was working when their eyes became less sensitive to being touched. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Ooops, I meant to say I have Biomycin. I didn't mean banamine. I will go out and treat her right away with the biomycin. I appreciate all of your help. I have some eye ointment on hand as well and will put in her eyes. She is still up eating and drinking, I can just tell that she is miserable. I know I would be. |

Banamine is a pain killer and antinflammatory (think heavy duty ibuprofen...), not an antibiotic. The dose is 1 cc per 100 pounds. Banamine should be used rather cautiously, it can cause digestive ulcers. It won't really do much for pinkeye. When you get the LA 200 treat her with a daily injection and also put a few drops in each eye once or twice a day. Or get a tube of eye ointment and use that a couple times a day in conjunction with the injections. I know the eye ointment is expensive, but it is very soothing and worth it, especially in the first day or two of treatment. Wash around the eyes with warm water. If you can provide her a place out of the wind and light she will be alot more comfortable. Bright light is very painful to a goat with pinkeye. Be very sure you do not touch your face when treating her and wash your hands very well afterwards. YOU can catch pinkeye and I can tell you its not pleasant! This is very contagious to the other goats. Isolate the infect one if you can and spray the feeders, hay racks, fencelines other surfaces with a bleach and water solution and let them dry (1-2 tablespoons of bleach to a quart of water). Watch very closely for goats that are squinting the least little bit, watch for eyes that are watering and begin treatment right away. With very early treatment the cure is often amazingly fast. Once it progresses to cloudy swollen eyes it can take a week or longer to see real results. A bout of pinkeye in the herd is a fact of life with goat ownership and this time of year seems to be when it is most common. Unlike cattle where pinkeye is spread by flies on the face, pinkeye in goats is most often spread by direct cheek to cheek contact or contact with surfaces that have been contaminated with the tears from infected goats. When you look at the top of her had, it lookes like her eyes we're swollen, not the actual eyeball, but around her eyes. Yes, her eyes are cloudy. I will go out today and give the la 200, well I have banamine, the dosage is the same, isn't it? Thank you!!! |

Take the doe's temperature. Matted eyes can be a symptom of a respiratory infection, even pneumonia. Any thermometer will work fine, I like a digital like you can get at the drug store. Be sure to lube it with vaseline and insert it into the rectum about 2 inches. Normal is 101.5 to 103.5 anything over 104 is a fever. Is her breathing fast and labored? Is she rattling or raspy sounding when she breathes? This would point to a respiratory infection. Are her eye membranes swollen and very red? Are her eyes watering? Are the eyes cloudy, is she squinting or keeping her eyes closed? This would be pinkeye. If it is oxytetracycline is a better choice of antibiotic. Give LA 200 (or the equivalent) at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection for 5 days or until the eyes clear. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Hi, I have a doe that has crusty, matted eyes. She was standing by herself on Wednesday. I don't think she can see that well out of them. I know she can see a little, but not very well. I gave her a shot of penicillin and some b vitamins on Wednesday, and again today. Yesterday they looked better, when I went out this morning it looked a little worse. She seems to be eating ok, the goats have a 3 acre pasture, I give them feed daily and offer some hay. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I should be doing for her? Thank you in advance for any information. |
