The goat is immune for life after a bout of soremouth. It is hard for a human to catch it but certainly not impossible. Not sure if a human is immune once over it though. Anyone owning goats will have soremouth go through their entire herd at some time or another. Reputable sale barns will not accept a goat showing signs of it and once the goat heals it is safe. Same with pinkeye.... A goat keeper will deal with it at some point. Sale barns won't take an animal showing it, and it is contagious to humans. Except pinkeye can recur! Practicing reasonable handwashing before and after handling ANY wound or sick goat is a must. At least you won't be the cause of spreading disease through your own herd that way and you protect yourself. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Does this virus re-occur in the animal or once they are over it, are they in the clear? Also, if it is contagious to humans.. same question. I have never liked the sound of "herpes" in any shape or form... If it re-occurs (as I think it does in humans) I think I'd want to get rid of the animal ASAP. |

You should vaccinate does with CDT 4 to 6 weeks before kidding. Most goats need hay in the winter. Any forage is old and doesn't have much nutritive value. Most does don't need much special feeding until 4 weeks or so before kidding and then you may wish to either increase the amount of grain given or start them on small amounts of grain and be prepared to give grain after the kids arrive. Any dietary changes must be done gradually. It is a good idea to have kidding stalls set up, does that kid in the general herd often don't bond with the kids and just abandon them. If the doe and kids are kept together and not allowed to get separated for the first day or two bonding usually goes very well. Get a kidding kit together. Develop a working relationship with an experienced goat keeper or a qualified vet, unless you are prepared to help a doe having a difficult delivery where the kid needs to be repositioned. Proper mineral supplementation is important at all times. Use a loose mineral with adequate copper 900 to 1800 ppm. If you are using a sheep and goat mineral it doesn't have enough copper. Deworm the does the day they kid. I like to use Iveremctin Injectable for Cattle and give it ORALLY at 1 cc per 25 to 30 pounds, DO NOT UNDERDOSE. It is very safe you must be sure to give enough. This is probably soremouth, and really the best thing to do is to do nothing. It is caused by a herpesvirus and is similar to coldsores. The sores can occur anywhere on the goat's body, the lips and muzzle being the most common place, but it can be seen on a doe's udder, around the tail. It is too late to vaccinate the rest of the herd, they have already been exposed. The vaccine itself is an active case of soremouth, but you "vaccinate" on the inside thigh and at the time of your choosing. Mnay companies don't sell it because the risk is too great that the person giving the vaccine will infect themselves. It is contagious to people but humans usually get it on their hands. If you opt to treat the sores be sure to wear latex gloves and wash very well afterwards. If you get a very painful sore that won't heal on your hand be sure to tell the doctor you have been exposed to orf (that's what it is called in people). Some people swear by gentian violet, a solution you can get by asking the pharmacist. Apply it once a day and it helps speed healing. The sores should completely heal in 4 to 6 weeks even if you do nothing. Do not take the goats to sale or to a show or sell any until the sores are completely healed. Once a goat has had soremouth they are usually immune for life. Soremouth is something nearly every goat keeper will have to deal with at some time or another. Be sure the goats have hay and water, their mouths will be a bit tender and they may take extra time to eat. Most goats get over it with very little trouble. Watch for it on the udders of nursing does and be sure she still lets the kids nurse. It can make the teats pretty sore. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic
