I will try to get some Dex from the vet for him. He seemed to be a little better last night after having the Pen G, he was moving his head with purpose and using his nose to touch his friend. But he's right back where we started this morning. Thank you all for your help, Rachael |

You should not give pen and oxytet together, they basically cancel each other out. Discontinue the pen about 12 hours before starting the oxytet. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Can I give him the LA in addition to the Pen G or should I discontinue the Pen G. I was giving it w/ the B1 because I saw that it was recommended on the Tennessee Meat Goat site. |

In case this is also joint ill or navel ill I would use oxytet (LA 200). Give 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection once a day for 10 days. Be sure you are giving enough B Complex, the regular formula has only 12. 5 mg/ml too, just like the Cyanoplex. BoSe is by prescription only, selenium is highly regulated by the FDA. I looked for Bo Se at the feed store, but they didn't have it. I did buy a new bottle of the B Complex w/ B1 though, on the off chance that my old bottle wasn't good. And he's on probiotics now also since last night. He is about the same as he was yesterday, maybe slightly worse. Seems to be laying down more but still eating, etc. I'm wondering if I should try giving him Pen G w/ Procaine? Rachael |

I think I would also try a half a cc of Bo-Se. It can't hurt. Dawn |

No it isn't normal for a kid this young. But if the B1 helps then that's what he has. Give 2 cc per 2 pounds of weight (about what you gave). Give him several days to see if he outgrows his problem. You might also give a probiotic to jump start the digestive microbes that usually make thiamin. It is very hard to overdose B Vitamins, be generous. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Hi, The Cyanoplex has 12.5 mg of B1 in addition to the other stuff. After I did the math for his most recent shot I gave him 5 cc's, I think 2 cc's wasn't quite enough. I'm guessing his weight at about 10 lbs. He is eating, pooping (a little) and peeing (alot) and seems pretty strong. He nurses the bottle very well, I just have to hold him so he can. But he is head pressing, thrashing around and crying quite a bit and cocking his head sideways. Is it normal to have a kid only a few hours old with Goat Polio? Or could this be something else? His temp is 102.3. Thank you, Rachael |

When I looked up Cyanoplex on the internet it shows it is B12 not B1. How much B1 does it have per cc, check carefully. The goat needs 10 mg/pound of B1 (B12 won't help) every 6 hours or so for the first 24 hours. Fortified B Complex has 100 mg/ml (cc), so the dose for it would be 1 cc per 20 pounds. Be sure you ARE giving B1 (thiamin) to treat polio. Does he poop and pee? It may be that due to his condition his digestive system isn't moving. The milk may cause bloat whereas the alectrolyte was mostly absorbed. He is probably hypoglycemic too (low blood sugar). You might try giving a couple of ccs of Karo syrup. I had a kid born 2 days ago who when I found him was curled up on his back with his neck twisted to one side, blind and unable to stand. My vet recommended 2 cc's Cyanoplex (has B-1 in it) for a couple of days. I've done that and he has improved slightly, he can stand but cannot walk without falling, is still blind and still has obvious neurological problems. I'm looking for ideas on what else to try. This kid was only a 1/2 day old or less when I found him in this condition. I'm giving him the Cyanoplex, 2cc's 3 times a day as well and have been feeding him Re-Sorb. I gave him a bottle of milk replacer a little while ago and he seems to be doing worse now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Rachael |
