GOOD NEWS!! Finally got the liitle fella to the vet this afternoon. She did a fecal and there is no coccidia or other parasites. Lanced the bump and it was full of clear fluid...looked like water. There was some hair and debris inside from probably a minor injury, but no pus at all. The vet says she's 99.9% sure that there is no CL...I had her go ahead and send the fluid for a culture just to be certain. I have 25 besides the new buckling and don't want to take any chances. The diarrhea is gone, he's still eating, and looks a lot better. After a few days of worry and a sizeable vet bill,it appears we may be out of the woods with this one.
Maggie and Dawn, thanks very much for your knowledge and advice.

He probably has coccidia. I use Sulmet, Dimethox or Albon 12.5% Drinking Water solution. Give it undiluted at 1 cc per 5 pounds for 5 days. Give a probiotic every day too. Like Dawn says papto ONLY treats the sysmptom, it doesn't help at all with coccidia. Be very careful how much concentrated grain you are giving, no more than a handful twice a day. He likely has never had it in his life and it can cause digestive upset. But it is very common for auction kids to break with coccidia. Watch for respiratory disease too. He was exposed to EVERY SINGLE bad germ and bug known to goats. Buying at auction can be incredibly risky, especially young animals with virtually no resistance to disease.

You can give pepto but it only helps the symptom not the cause of the problem. I would go with the dimethox, we have had great luck with that on our farm. It wont hurt to give pedialyte. Hope this helps until Maggie can answer.

Now the little guy has diarrhea. I put a call in to the Vet this morning but haven't heard from him yet. What should I give him.for the runs. I read the archive posts regarding Sulmet and Dimethox. Is this the way to go or would Pepto Bismol work in the short run? Also should I keep giving him the Pedialytes to keep him hydrated?

A hard lump is not milk goiter. It is likely an abscess. You know the drill. Kind of you to rescue him. Watch to be sure it doesn't hinder his breathing. You may want to schedule a vet visit very soon.

This was an auction baby that we rescued. He can't have been away from mama that long but he has been away long enough to stop crying. We wormed him as soon as we got him home and gave him CD&T innoculation, and Pedialytes. He's eating hay and pellets and seems to feel better today. the lump is about the size of a golf ball and feels hard. We'll watch him and see how it progresses from here. I'll give the vet a call in the morning and see what he recommends.
Thanks for the help Maggie.

Was he just weaned? This could be milk goiter. Go here and see if this is what it looks like: http://fiascofarm.com/goats/milk_neck.htm

Or it could be an abscess.

Watch and wait to see if it isn't causing him any problems right now. Kids can get scrapes and puncture wounds on their heads from climbing through fences, hay racks etc more so than adult goats. If it does turn out to be an abscess (it may grow, and as it becomes ready to poo it may loose the hair on the top of it)isolate the goat, and have the vet lance it and culture it just in case. You don't want a goat with CL.

Just bought a young buckling and he has a large lump in his neck. Any suggestions?
