Don't worry about trying to start the young one on a bottle, it is nearly impossible if they have been dam raised. Offer horse quality hay and about as much grain as they can clean up in about 10 to 15 minutes twice a day. They should have a loose mineral, preferably one made for goats, but be sure it has adequate copper. Look for one with 900 to 1500 ppm copper and 3000 to 4000 ppm zinc. A loose mineral made for beef cattle is a pretty good substitute. Do not use anything labeled for sheep and goats, it won't have enough copper. Deworm all of them with ivermectin injectable for cattle, give 1 cc per 25 pounds. Give at least 1 cc minimum dose. Repeat in 2 weeks. At this age the stress of moving can bring on coccidiosis. It doesn't hurt to begin treatment, giving a sulfa drug such as Albon or Sulmet 12.5% Drinking Water Solution. Do not add it to the water, use it full strength and give 1 cc per 5 pounds the first day and 1 cc per 10 pounds for 4 more days. Then to prevent coccidiosis you can give 1 cc per 10 pounds once weekly until they are 6 months old or so. I have lots of pygmy info on my website at www.maggidans.com I would love to see pictures. Post them here on the forum or send them to me privately. If any of them are still intact males be aware tehy can be fertile beginning at 12 to 16 weeks. Does can be fertile at the same age and are little hussies. They can sneak into a buck's pen through the smallest opening. A vet can give Lutalyse to end any unwanted pregnancy.... Hi Maggie, I know you raise pygmys, my husband came home with 3 babies. They are so adorable. 2 are 12 weeks and 1 eight weeks. They are already weaned, I know so young. I tried offering the young one a bottle but I can't get her to take it. She is eating grain and hay. Should I start them on minerals? Anything I should watch for? Thanks. |
