The vaccine is a live vaccine, essentially it gives an active infective case of soremouth to the vaccinated goat. BUT it is given in the inner flank area not on the lips (soremouth lesions can occur anywhere on the body) at a time of your choosing. The animal is considered to be contagious until the lesion heals completely. Most goats that get soremouth are then immune for a very long time, probably for life.

I have dealt with soremouth twice in 16 years of goat keeping. I am sure I will deal with it again at some time. I do not vaccinate for it and I don't really see the point. Soremouth doesn't seem to bother goats as much as it does sheep, they seldom go off feed (sheep do). Any of the treatments listed in previous posts do help the lesions heal faster and help to prevent secondary infections.

Vaccinating might be useful if you have a lot of animals coming onto your farm (such as a feedlot).

IN MY OPINION NO i DON'T VACCINATE FOR SOREMOUTH MOST OFTEN ONCE IT GOES THROUGH THE HERD YOU AREN'T BOTHERED BY IT ANYMORE.

There are some of us that also use Grentian Violet. It's an anti-infective first aid antiseptic. You will have to go to the pharmacy and ask for it. Most stores only keep the 1 oz. size but I have been able to order larger sizes. It's a pain to get on so we have a 1 oz. spray bottle that we keep ours in.

Sore Mouth is highly contagious and the rest of your herd will probably get it from their drinking water or just touching each other. Wear gloves when treating it and wash your hands thoroughly!! It's very painful to humans.

Maggie got me through it the first time we had to deal with it. At one time or another you will deal with sore mouth. I think Maggie also said that one they get it they are immune from getting it again.

On thing please be careful when you touch the sores as you also can get the virus. This virus can cause some pretty nasty sores on your skin as well

Hi, Dee
This is soremouth [ORF].
Pen won't help it mostly has to run it's course there is a vaccine for it called Ovine Ecthyma but once they have it it is no use to you.
You can mix Iodine and Athlete feet cream mixed together and applied to keep soft and promote healing.
It may show up on more goats also it may appear on the does udder where the kid nurses.
