They can have all the hay they want. If you have a probiotic give that too through all of this. What you are trying to do is to kill the bad bacteria that's in their guts now and replenish it with good bacteria. And trying to get their gut moving again. Any chance they are chewing cud? Okay, no grain. What about hay? When should I offer that? The donkey is up and around normally and they do not have the best of my pastures.......mostly weeds. I do store the chicken feed in a feed room that has a pad lock on it (because of past experiences with donkeys). However, these guys broke into the chicken yard! I have a lot of chickens, guineas and turkeys, so had several feeders about full. I will definiately beef up the gate that they got through! I have given each 8cc SQ and orally of the pen and 18cc milk of mag. I am getting really to do the baking soda next. I can't say enough how much I appreciate all of the support! |

No grain for anyone for at least a week! Including the donkey. Lock up the chicken feed away from any area were the goats and dokey can even remotely get to. I keep mine IN THE HOUSE. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thank you so much Maggie. Again, you are a blessing. Without you these guys would most likely not even have a chance. If you think of anything else I may try, please don't hesitate to let me know. By the way, the donkey looks fine.......so far. |

Yes, doing all the rest of the treatments may help. No one carries the antitoxin, not even most vets, you have to mail order it. I just thought you might have it... Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

The fever is only at the very beginning of a bout of entero. As the rumen and digestive system shuts down the temp falls to subnormal, treat for entero, time is running out. Most goats die of entero BEFORE the diarrhea ever starts. Giving the baking soda as directed by the vet (maybe less water as the rumen is no longer moving and can only hold so much) will help but give the penicillin and antitoxin too. You might treat for bloat too giving some vegetable oil to help break up the gas bubbles and help them burp. These goats are in very critical condition! Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Okay, I think I may have misdiagoned. They do not have fever. It is actually too low at 99. She still has nice goat berries as well. I did talk to a vet who does not believe it is ENTEROTOXEMIA. His advice was to dilute a box of baking soda into a gallon of water and give each goat 1/2. Does this sound right? The doe look horrible and is moaning. The wether does not not look good either, but does not appear quite as bad. I have only had these guys a couple of weeks, but they are very, very sweet animals. I hope to help them through this! |

To treat entero give penicillin at 1 cc per 15 pounds by SQ injection and give the same dose orally. Give this 3 times a day for a couple of days. Give CD antitoxin at 10 to 15 cc 3 times a day until the goat is back to normal again. Give Milk of Magnesia to help move the chicken feed out of the system, do not try to stop any diarrhea she may develop. Treat the other goat too. You can give banamine at 1 ccper 100 pounds for pain. If you have a knowledgeable goat vet CALL THEM! In the future if there is even the least chance a goat has gotten into grain feed and eaten their fill start them on Milk of Magnesia at 15 cc per 100 pounds every 6 hours until the stools go from normal to clumpy or diarrhea back to normal again. Give the CD antitoxin if you have it. Watch your donkey for signs of colic and founder. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

My nubian doe, her companion wether and a mini donkey all got into the chicken yard yesterday and helped themselves to quite a bit of chicken feed. I thought that the goats were probably okay, because I figured the donkey would not have let the goats get to the feed. I was obvisouly VERY wrong. My doe is down and extremely miserable. What can I do for her? I understand that time is critical here, but have never dealt with this before. Please let me know what to do for her! |
