The little girl was doing pretty good this morning. No signs of blood so far. She was alert & came running to me for breakfast. It seems that everyday is a new learning experience. Thank you for all your advice.

Hoegger makes a goat serum that is supposed to be a good replacement for colostrum antibodies. Not cheap but better than losing kids. It is always best to have frozen colostrum rom your own goats, they have immunities to the germs from your own farm. You might also contact any other goat breeders (especially dairy goat breeders). They sometimes have colostrum for sale. Teach a few of your does to milk. On my website at http://www.maggidans.com I have an illustrated article showing the proper way to hand milk (makes all the difference in the world!) it is on my FYI Page. You NEED to know how to milk, you need to make some sort of stanchion for doing this and trimming feet. And you need to be able to get your goats caught up when it is necessary.

I will also be marketing a handmilking device very soon.... Boer milk is very rich, any goat can be a good milk goat. I milk my pygmies and get more milk than I know what to do with.

She seemed better this evening, no blood actively coming out like it was earlier in the day. She had her appetite back but I didn't let her drink but 2 ounces cause I understand that too much is not good either. Do you have suggestion for any colostrum substitute besides getting it from the mom? We're new to boer goats & they don't seem to cooperate with us in that manner. I've successfully raised some kids & I've also lost some kids with Kid Magic milk replacer however, I will try the milk replacer recipe you recommended. I appreciate your help. Thank you so much.

Its way too late for colostrum and antibodies, they have to have that the first 12 hours of life. The other colostrum replacer doesn't have antibodies either. The naturally occurring organisms are the digestive microbes they also pick up from their dam's licking them on the face and mouth. Same as probiotics or the "live cultures" that are found in yogurt. Don't switch foods again, that is the main cause of the problem, to amny changes in her diet and no colostrum. Just treat with the spectam and hope for the best. The outlook isn't good but where there is life there is hope.

There is a very good milk replacer recipe on the articles page, if she starts to improve you can gradually change her over to that. Most powdered milk replacers don't even contain any real milk, many have soy or wheat protein which kids do not digest well.

I went out again after about an hour after I posted. This time it was red liquid (watery blood) coming out so I contacted the vet & they gave me some red medicine to give her. I think my receipt says it's Spectam. Unfortunately, I looked at the label of the colostrum & it said no source of antibodies. I do have a different jar of colostrum that says it has naturally occuring microorganisms. Is this the antibodies you're talking about? We bought the nanny last November & she's not turning out to be a good mother. My husband is out of town & I'm goat sitting. I couldn't catch the mom to get milk or colostrum from & I couldn't even try to pen her up with her babies but she was not tending to them at all, that's why I've got them on a bottle. Also, feeding Kid Magic milk replacer, not actual goat milk powder. This is what I can get at the feed store & apparently everyone here uses it. Should I switch to the colostrum with the naturally occuring microorganisms? How can we get antibodies without getting from the mom? Also, is actual goat milk powder better than milk replacer? Thanks for all your help.

Her poop should be yellow by now, the dark is meconium. The diet you are giving is probably too rich. Can you get milk from her mom or fresh goats milk? Did you not have real colostrum from the doe? The powdered colostrum usually doesn't have any antbodies to speak of. And is it a milk replacer or actual powdered goats milk? Digestive bleeding suggests possible enterotoxemia.

Kaopectate or pepto bismol will help with the diarrhea and the gut pain. Give 5 to 10 cc.

Got a baby girl on bottle almost 48 hours old. Been giving her colostrum powder mix & started putting goat milk powder in it this morning. Just went out to give them lunch feeding. She did not want to drink but she is standing & wagging tail. Her voice sounds kind of pitiful. The poop is more red than brown & kind of liquidy. She had a little strip of the (first) black poop at 8:30 last night at last feeding for day. Her butt was clean as a whistle this morning. Should I worry? And what can I do for her?
