Probiotics would be good. And you know you can't really overdose on B Complex, any excess B vitamins are excreted in the urine. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thanks for the advice.. i did up the b-complex a bit but not to much.. would a bit of probiotic powder help the rumen in his stomach improve?? i know he wont be much use breeding the rest of the year. Luckily all of the nannies that we have that are of breeding are already bred and a couple are getting close to kidding out..I will try your MAGIC mix tomorrow and see what happens.. Hopefully he can hold on long enough and pull through this all.. thanks for all your help |

You haven't missed anything I don't think he is just running out of any reserves he had left. Goats will "fake" good health and strength for as long as they can. A sick animal is mercilessly pushed from the herd and they instinctively know that showing weakness attracts predators. Goats are very instinctive, they never know it is okay to be sick. This will pretty much be the norm until he recovers or not. He will make some slow progress then may slip back some. I had a wether like this years ago that took nearly a year to recover but finally did. You may not be using him much this year if at all. From his not eating he may be getting more and more thiamin deficient, you might try giving more B complex or giving it more often. You can also mix up a batch of magic (1 part molasses, 1 part vegetable oil, 2 parts karo syrup mixed with a bit of warm water to thin it some) give 2 to 3 ounces 3 times a day for energy. This stuff tastes pretty good, has a good amount of iron in it too. With his anemic blood he is oxygen deprived most of the time. Seriously recovery is going to take a LONG time. Maggie.. my buck seems to be doing better at times at and at other times he seems like he is not doing any better.. For instance, we rotated pastures today and when he realized that he was left laying by himself he amde an attempt to trot to where the others where and stopped and layed down.. Since we are supposed to be getting hit with rain tonight, we put him in the barn but made sure to clean it well.. i just went out to check on him and he seems to be staggering a bit.. He has eatten a little and is drinking plenty of water.. Still giving the b-complex and nutridrench.. Is there any thing else that he might have that we can check for?? He is strong, not as strong, but not completely weak.. This is starting to confuse me a little.. Maybe something else is wrong that we missed??? Any more suggestions would be great.. |

Maggie... things are looking a little better this evening.. my father in law put out some feed and he acted like he was a little interested in the loose mineral.. he said that he even took a couple bites of the feed.. i know hes not gonna eat a whole lot right now but little steps foward are better than going backwards.. im am going to keep him on the b-complex and will still give the nutridrench until he is up and eating like the pig he used to be..haha.. i think what has kept him going this long was the fact that he was in such good condition.. he is still urinating frequently and is still clear as water.. hopefully he will pull out of all of this and make a full recovery.. Where exactly is the show in lumberton.. Me and my fiance make try to make it over there for that.. well i just gave him another small dose of the drench for the night. hopefully it will help ease the stomache pain from the worms.. thanks again for your help |

Oh we are sorta neighbors I am in Durham, NC. I have heard that goats like geritol you might switch to that. Yeah I know they hate the Nutridrench, have you tasted it, pretty mediciney. My Nutridrench says to give 30 cc per 100 pounds, but you can probably give 1/3 of that since you are giving it daily, so not to go overboard. The B Complex is 5 cc per 100 pounds. I do know on the B Complex you can't overdose. Technically you can overdose on the Nutridrench but it would be hard to. We are due to be in Lumberton for a show this weekend, when all the storm may hit, we'll see! Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Maggie..we gave another b-complex shot today and started the nutri drench as you said.. he seems to be a little better but not a whole lot..i will keep with the drenhing and the b-complex.. hopefully he will start eating on his own again soon.. he hates the nutridrench..as far as the rest of the herd, we checked their eyelids and all are a deep rosey pink as they should be.. we just wormed all the others last weekend and they are all doing fine..he still has a good amount of strength in him. Found that out from having to give him the nutridrench on my own.. just for future reference, how much should i give him?? before he got sick he was close to 200 lbs but is now only about 150.. and how much b-complex should i give him each day?? thanks again for all of your help.. oh, im located in NC.. im originally from TX though.. mosquitos have been BAD here along the coast from all of the rain and looks like more is headed our way..hopefully he will keep improving and get back to his old stubborn self.. so keep your fingers crossed.. |
