It is not unusual for just one goat to get polio or listeriosis. Neither is contagious from goat to goat. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Well, I finally spoke with the vet a little while ago. He definitely didn't have rabies. The preliminary results of the necropsy are that he had listeriosis. She said the he was quite inflamed in his brain stem. They are still waiting on some test results before they can say for sure. Also, they're testing for CAE which will be another 1-2 weeks before they get those results back. She said that she's betting on the listeriosis though. The vet said that I don't need to really worry about the other goats if they are looking fine. She said that this is quite uncommon. Would you agree? |

Let me know what you find out. Polio can cause permanent fatal brain damage if it isn't treated quickly. He may have had listeriosis, a similar condition but it is caused by a bacterial infection of the brain not a vitamin deficiency. They should be able to tell something on necropsy. Hi Maggie I have some bad news. I wanted to give you an update on Clyde sooner but it has been a crazy last couple of days. As I said before Clyde started doing better Friday evening and Saturday morning. He was drinking and eating on his own and starting to move around a little better. You could tell that he had more energy. All of the sudden by Saturday night it was like he relapsed. We went out to the barn and he fell over and it looked like his muscles were contracting. He just layed their lifeless though he was still breathing. We tried to get him some electrolytes and took him to Michigan State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. They tried Thiamine and some other antabiotics but nothing seemed to help him improve. I decided today to have them put him down. They are performing a necropsy to determine the cause of death. They thought maybe he had eaten a poisonous plant but his blood work came back fine. The doctor was pretty surprised. They are leaning toward Polio, CAE or rabies. We should know by the end of the week. I'll keep you posted. |

You can let him drink as much as he wants. Glad he is doing better. Tomorrow (and for 2 ot 3 days after) give him some probios or a couple of tablespoons of yogurt with active cultures to replenish the lost digestive microbes. You will have to drench with these he won't take them willingly. If he gets diarrhea in the next day or so don't worry too much, it is just his body clearing any leftover toxins. I think you are a life saver! I mixed up the cooking oil, ginger, tea and baking soda antidote and let it work for about 1 1/2 hours. Then I mixed up and electrolyte "potion". He was sucking that down but I didn't let him have too much at once. I wasn't sure if it would upset his system again. I'm giving him a little at a time and not forcing him (He's doing pretty well taking it at his own pace). I saw him eat a little bit not long ago. I put some of the electrolyte drink I made in his water dish and he started sucking it down. You can tell that he still isn't all there but he's definitaley starting to perk up. I think I may have had a dead goat if it wasn't for you. Thank you so much. I'll keep you posted on how he is doing. |

Hi Megan I have emailed a response to your 911 request. You will have to drench with a poisoning antidote or other remedy. Goats don't take them for themselves. He may throw it back up but he will keep some of it. You will need to keep him hydrated. As young as he is and at the rate he is losing fluids he is in grave danger. I also emailed a list of vets, any within 2 hours of driving should be considered close enough to help. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I have a 2 month old Nigerian Dwarf whether. I went out to our barn this morning and he was throwing up all over, shaking, and wouldn't move. I'm guessing one of two things; he either ate something bad or something happened between him and our cat. At about 9:00 pm last night he was acting really strange and kind of screaching at our kitten. I'm not sure if they are related or not. I'm not really sure what to do. He won't drink, take baking soda or vegetable oil. I'm afraid to drench him since he is getting sick. I don't want to choke him. Please help! |
