A fan sure can't hurt. Alleviating any overcrowding will help too. Standard sized goats should have 30 to 40 square feet each in a shelter. So a shelter for 10 goats needs to be at least 300 to 400 square feet, a 15 x 20 to a 20 by 20 shelter minimum....

Thanks! I guess with all the rain - about a week of it straight - not much had a chance to dry out -probably from the ammonia in the shed-not much of a breeze to ventilate-the air was very still. Do you think a vent fan would help-I guess it cant' hurt.

The temperature has NOTHING to do with getting pneumonia. I had my one and only bout with it in August in Florida, I was sick as a dog! Over crowding, stress and ammonia buildup in the barn often brings it on. Boers are very susceptible to the stresses of a high humidity climate. They were developed out in the open in a desert climate. It is very clod at night in the desert, very hot during the day, but they aren't crowded into a stuffy barn and the humidity is very low, bedding dries out very fast, ammonia dissipates. Purebred goats and any other purebred animal is often not as resistant as a crossbreed. Boers in this country have a very limited gene pool too really. We have thousands of animals that all go back to only about 100 to 200 originals at the most. In the wild a population of less than 500 is considered not viable, not enough genetic diversity for the species to survive....

Why are my goats getting pneumonia now? It been really hot and teh temp fell a couple of night down to maybe 60 maybe 55 and then hot really humid again. It also seems that the ones getting sick are 100% boers. I've heard a lot about the more purebred they are the more problems you have with them is this true.

If they are getting pneumonia now what is winter going to be like?
