Not immediately for the ants and for the ant to die it must come in contact with it. But it should work pretty quickly and you should see results in a few days to a week. Sure can't hurt to try it. There are bait stations specifically for fire ants, if the hill is outside the pen you can bait the hill. There is a big question whether DE really works for internal parasites as well. It will tend to kill the eggs and hatching larva in the feces, reducing the chances or reinfestation. Cuts down on fly maggots in manure piles too. But it may not have much effect on the adult parasites living in the gut. For DE it work it has to be dry. It works by cutting the hard exoskeleton of the insect causing it to dehydrate and die. Please wear a mask when you spread it, even the food safe kind is dangerous if you breathe the dust. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

If you do go for the diatomacious earth, be sure you buy the organic kind, not the stuff for pools. The kind for pools can be bad for your goats. Also, if you have any extra left over, you can mix it with loose minerals and give it to them. I've heard it works as a dewormer. |

Diatomacious Earth is organic and non poisonous to goats. It does a great job getting rid of fire ants and some other tiny critters. |

I am having problems with fire ants in my show goat shed/pen. It is bedded with wood shavings and the ants have made one hill that I have found and they are crawling all over the floor of the pen. I am worried about the goats having reactions from getting bit too much |
