Confine the doe and kid to a small stall. This encourages a good bond, I ALWAYS do this. Some does will resist nursing when their udders are very full and/or they are first timers. First milk out a squirt or two to be sure the teat is open, there is a waxy plug in it at first. Hold the doe and let the kid nurse. Gently encourage the doe when the kid is nursing she will "get it" and find out that a nursing kid relieves the pressure. Let her turn her head, while you are still holding her to smell the baby while the kid is nursing. The kid REALLY needs to nurse within a half and hour to an hour from kidding and then every 20 minutes or so. The ear biting is overzealous cleaning. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

My other pygmy doe jsut had her first birth about 2 hours ago,we were out feeding other animals and she did it really quietly. The baby is alert and trying to eagerly eat but the Mom keeps kicking up her back leg to push her off and stand in the corner. She is licking her but she also bites her ears.Is she rejecting her and how long do I let this go on. They are laying in seperate corners of the pen. Thanks for any help, Robin |
