Just wanted to share my experience so your friend knows what to expect. I have a young boer doe that I am raising up to be a future breeder. Billy got out of his domain in with the does for less than 5 min. I knew this young one was in heat at the time but did not see billy breed her. I waited until time for her next cycle time and then knew she been bred. It been 4 or 5 weeks after she was bred before I got the med. Vet sold me 2 doses of Lutalyse. He said give second dose two days later, I think was to help her contract and clean out. 2nd day I notice occasional drops of bloody mucous. On 3rd day I found a tiny fetus on ground. It was not until a day or so after that she dialated and she began acting sort of paranoid or spooky like some does do after giving birth. I think its a reaction to a hormone release related to the dialation. She returned to normal after a few days, but she drained out the back end for about 3 1/2 weeks. Since then she been growing up and developing wonderful. |

You have to wait at least 10 days after the accidental breeding for her to be at the right time in her cycle (or for the pregnancy to actually implant in the uterus) for lutalyse to work. Quite a few vets recommend repeating the dose in 2 weeks just to be sure the pregnancy was aborted. This is EXACTLY the same technique that is used to synchronize heat cycles in dairy and beef cattle and goats for artificial insemination of large group of animals at the same time. Lutalyse is a prescription only so you have to get it from a vet. BE INSISTANT! Some vets are very reluctant to dispense this drug not knowing pygmies can be such precocious breeders (early puberty). Be very careful when handling this drug, which si actually a hormone. It can be absorbed through the skin, it is an abortive for pregnant women too or could wreak havoc with your hormone balance. Thank you Maggie! Kim and I were wondering about the timing of the Lutalyse. Do you need to get this from a vet? |

Wait at least 10 days from when your think the doe may have been bred or the lutalyse won't work. She can definitely become pregnant at 4 months old. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I would give her 2 cc's of Lutalyse that will cause her to abort if she did get bred. I would wait a few days before giving it to her. Keep in mind that if she didn't get bred that this will cause her to go into heat, so you will want to use every precaution to keep her away from the buck |

A friend of mine called me this morning distressed. Her little Pygmy doe which is about 4 months old found her way to her buck who is a couple months older. She did not see anything going on, but is VERY concerned that the young doe MAY have been bred. She also asked me about any meds that may prevent pregnancy. I did not know what to tell her, but thought maybe I could get some help for her here. What do you all think the chances of her (DOB 3/16/06) being bred. Unfortunately, the buck is surely old enough at 6 months to do his thing. Thanks in advance for ANY help or advise for Kim. |
