Tammy, until your little guy gets stronger and older I wouldn't put him out with the rest of your herd yet.

I have a small kid still living in my bathroom at night. She gets her bottle after I'm done milking and taken outside to join the rest of them during the day. She's so small that she can wiggle through the fence and we don't want her out there alone. I have had up to 3 living in the house at one time.

We had a little Nubian buck living inside with us for awhile (slept next to my bed everynight or out in the living room with classical music playing over the sterio) and he also went to work with me for three weeks. I work for a CPA so it was quite interesting with our clients. Our little Nubian had joint ill severely as well as some other birth issues. He would walk for a day and then be done for three days and back and forth for weeks. He is now out in the pasture with our other goats and loves being a goat! He can run and play but is not the same as the other goats. He can't jump or climb and will probably always be a little wobbly on his feet. Hang in there! It's amazing how goats can recover and live pretty normal lives.

Thank you Sassy. That gives us some hope. You're right about goats being fighters and of course this little guy has completely stolen our hearts. He does have a buddy that we can bring in to be with him; that's a really good idea. My husband laughs because we're quite sure we're the only people in town with a goat living inside!

I have a boar nanny that had polio last year and she can't walk a straight line. She sways and walks sideways. It took a lot for me to let her out in the pasture two months later with the herd. I was so afraid she would get hurt but it was the best thing for her. Maggie got us through this one too. LOL She is not perfect but she's living a good quality of life. Put another goat with her to be her buddy so she's not alone. When the time comes she can join the herd. These little guys are fighters. She usually lags behind the rest when they come up to be locked in their pen and grained for the night. In the beginning she fell a lot but she overcame that too. Good luck and keep us posted how he is doing.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience with a goat who has recovered from the effects of polio, but can't walk afterwards. Our 10 week old male Nubian has recovered well (With many thanks to Maggie!) from the polio onset. He is peeing and pooping and eating up a storm. We have been keeping him inside since it's been in the 100 degree range all week, taking him out to see his mother a couple of times a day. He has lots of spunk and literally pulls himself through the grass to get to her, but he can't seem to quite use his front legs. Sometimes he actually stands and then quickly falls. Will this get better or might he be lame for life? While he was sick we moved his legs frequently keeping the blood flowing and held him up, but he has not actually walked in over 6 days now. Thanks so much in advance!
