I had the same concern about worming when already weak, but found that doing so really helped in the long run. I used to think (duh!) that the scours that some does got shortly after kidding was due to some hormonal thing, since I saw it frequently. Now I worm each doe the day after kidding with the Ivermectin (as Maggie advised) and have elliminated that problem, THANKFULLY! |

Ivermectin is considered safe for goats in a weakened state, it is that safe. It is a poison to lower life forms not a poison to goats unless given at incredibly high doses. If she has worms and is nursing babies she is not going to get better until the worms are under control. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thanks, Sandra for all the good advice. What I'm trying to figure out is, if the goat(nubian, by the way) is already in a weakened state, wouldn't the wormer, which is a poison, weaken her further? I know I need to get rid of the problem. I just wish she were stronger before I had to give her the wormer. She did take some warm water mixed w/ karo, (I'm out of molasses). She also nibbled on some grain, so, she is improving. We gave her Nutridrench (which she hates!!!) yesterday. I'll give her the Bcomplex today. Thanks, again, for taking the time to respond to my post. I appreciate it! |

I am not an expert, but recently had a Nigerian Dwarf doe with young kids that had the same problem. This is the advise that I was given by Maggie- First check the eyelids to see the color. It should be deep rosy or salmon pink. If pale pink or white the problem is worms. For that give 1cc per 25 lbs of Ivermection injectable for cattle for 2 days, then one time again in two weeks. I was assured that it's hard to overdose with this and make sure you DO give enough. In my case with a mini it was at least 3cc. If yours is a large goat of course more will be needed. You can also give B complex injectable 2x a day by SQ injection (This I did and it seemed to help). You can also give Goat Nutridrench, Geritol (give the adult dose) or RedCell for horses (give half the horse dose) once daily for a couple of weeks to help rebuild the iron in her blood. You can mix up a batch of Magic (1 part mloasses, 1 part vegetable oil, 2 parts karo syrup with a bit of warm water to thin it some) and give her an ounce 2 to 3 time a day for energy. She also advised me to check her temp to rule out other problems such as enterotoxemia. Hope this helps and good luck with her! Sandra |

We have a doe that had the scours yesterday and was off her feed. We treated her twice, yesterday and today she is doing better, although, she is still not eating feed. She is drinking water and grazing, slightly. Is it safe to worm her in this weakened condition? She kidded three weeks ago and we were using an herbal wormer on her and I'm afraid that might not have been the right thing to do right after kidding. I don't want to do anything, right now, that will weaken her anymore than she alread is. Thanks for your help. |
