Sorry to be so slow to reply...we've had so much rain that I've had no phone/internet svc for days.
I had checked that there was no other kid there. Her cervix remained open for several hours. I kept her in the "maternity" pen and gave her antibiotics 3 days and put her back with her "mates". She is bouncing around like a teenager, eating well. Her vulva was very swollen for 24 hours but quickly returned to normal and she has minimal lochia. I can only assume that what she passed was "buried" in the corral or eaten by someone, Thanks for your input. Lynne

Are you sure there were no more kids? If she still has one retained this could be why you haven't seen a placenta or anything else. It is too late now probably to go in to see as her cervix is pretty much closed. Keep her on penicillin 1 cc per 20 pounds twice a day, banamine once a day as needed, and have her checked by a knowledgeable vet as soon as you can.

When you deliver a kid like this ALWAYS go in immediately to check for more kids. Once labor starts a kid should be delivered within 30 to 45 minutes, if not GO IN AND CHECK. A goat won't push until something is in the cervix, but if they have broken their water and have clear yellowish "egg-white" consistency mucus they are definitely in labor and need to deliver within an hour or less...I have NEVER regretted going in to check to see if the doe is making normal progress.

If it is just a retained placenta it will dissolve and pass with the normal discharge.

Do not give oxytocin at this time, it causes uterine contractions and there is no opening now to push stuff out of, especially if she has another kid in there.

1st time mom, small Spanish/Boer cross, started labor yesterday afternoon then seemed to stop. When checked 4 hr later, she only pushed because I was inside her-no spontaneous contractions on her own. She brought the head down and I found it was "upside down", with no feet tangible. She is so small and I could get a hold of nothing to pull. By daybreak she had delivered the head of the now-dead kid & was walking around with no apparent contractions. I was able to deliver the kid, a large (7 lb) buck who had been dead for a while, was not only upside down but had one leg straight back.
I treated with Penicillin, Nuflor, Banamine and B-Complex. This eve. she is active, eating & drinking, a little "humped up" at times but only some old blood discharging. At no time have I seen mucus, placenta, blood bubble or any of the usual "products of conception" I usually see. When I checked her this evening, nothing is protruding from the cervix which is only 2-4cm open.
My vet is out of town until Wed. What should I try to get to be sure she cleans out? (I'm going to have to call a vet who doesn't have much caprine experience and I'd rather know what I want.)
