Barber Pole worms are a roundworm that is becoming very common in most of the US. The actual worm which is very small is striped like a Barber's pole hence the common name. You won't see them in the feces as they are nearly microscopic. When a fecal exam is done the vet or tectnician is not actually looking for worms, but looking for worm eggs which are incredibly tiny. There are several articles on the Articles page about these worms. Here are 2 very good ones: http://www.goatworld.com/articles/wormsncsu.shtml http://www.goatworld.com/articles/barberpole.shtml Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I have never heard of/encountered Barber Pole worms. Can someone explain what they are and what they look like? Are they prevalent all over or in specific areas of the country? Thanks |

Thanks for the info. Geritol? Never thought of that. The block they have is sweetlix protien block, plus meat maker loose mineral. Will treat with cydectin again. the grain they eat is loaded with everything they need also it is ritchies goat grower. amazing grain!!! As far as molassas goes can i use cattle stuff? Do you think it would harm them if dumped it on hay or leave it out free choice? I will mix electrolites in the waterer in the morning. Would vit b perk them up any? Barber pole worms are horriable in the valley because of all the deer. Thanks again!! |

Hi I would treat with Cydectin 1cc/18 lbs orally repeat in three days and again in 10 days. Give geritol the adult dose twice a day orally. Give warm molasses water also it is full of iron and give fortified vitamin b 10cc twice a day,and be sure and drench with electrolytes. Barbara Howard Capri-Medic jamesa@mrtc.com 606-522-3388 KY

What kind of minerals do you use? If it is a block or if it is labeled for sheep and goats the goats may not be getting enough copper (same for your feed...). Copper is vital for resistance to worms and for good red blood cells. Meat breeds need this more than most dairy breeds. Nutridrench is good for building red blood cells. Ivermectin will kill barber pole worms but the University of Florida recommends it be given at 3 times the cattle dose by weight and be given orally for it to be effective in goats. Resistance to ivermectin is being seen especially if it has been underdosed or used for more than 2 years. Cydectin is our last line of defense and the dewormer with the least resistance built up to it. Be sure to use it according to your vets recommendations, and have regular fecal exams to be sure the program is working. Boer goats and boer crosses are especially susceptible to internal parasites. They were bred in an environment where they did not need to have much resistance (desert like conditions). When we try to raise them in warm moist environments like that found in most of the US they fall prey to our parasites. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

We lost 6 kids yesterday to barber pole worms. They will fast. any advice on what to do to help build up their red blood cells. The are getting hay, excellent goat feed, minerals. I 've been giving Nutradrench to the weak ones and feeding grain 4xs a day. Worms have not been a problem on the farm. We always use ivermectin. However as we just discoverd it does not kill barber poles. Cydectin cattle is the only way to kill and you have to give int every 2 1/2 weeks for 4Xs. Many goats throughout the county are dying. Any info would be gratly appreciated. Thank you |
