I am from Canada and I don't think that I can get the vaccines across the boarder. I have one supplier that I order horse supplies from for my tack shop and they had the oxytet etc but no vaccines. I am going to check again though.

So you think that only 2 cc instead of the 4 cc that the bottle suggests for the covexin 8? I just want to make sure I do the right thing. Should I be giving the sick nanny the vaccine or wait till she is better. I don't want to over due anything with her.

Yes you can feed her grain, she needs it to keep producing milk. Keep treating her eyes and giving the oxytet.

You can buy the tetanus antitoxin, any vaccines, CD antitoxin from almost any online livestock supply company for ALOT less than from the vet. The vaccine won't do any good for the kids before the age of 8 to 10 weeks. Many people use the Covexin 8 for their goats. There are very few meds labeled for goats. Give both the adults and the kids 2 cc. Booster in 3 weeks.

Hi Again,

Well, her eyes are definately worse. They are now really red around the outside and completely opaque. I cannot see her colours in her eyes. However her temp was 104.36 last night and this morning it is 103.28. She seems slow, it is not difficult to catch her. Her babies seem fine so far. She still has milk. She is eating well too. Can I still give her her grain? She eats a 13% sweet feed (horse feed basically)? She gets 1 cup twice a day.

I put more triple antibiotic eye ointment in her eyes this morning too.

Goodmorning Maggie,

Candy is worse this morning. I am hoping that it is just the infection running it's course. I gave her the first injections yesturday around 5 pm and it is now almost 11 am here. Can I give her the 4 cc of oxytet now? or wait till 5 pm again? Can I give her the .6 cc banamine now or later. Could I give the childrens motrin in hte meantime?

Also, I was at the vets this morning to get tetnus toxoid (which I thought was tetnus antitoxin and they corrected me) to give to my babies before they are castrated and de-horned. They told me they couldn't give me the tetnus alone as it is not registered for goats!! They sold me Covexin 8 which covers clostridium chauvoei-haemolyticum-novyi Type B-perfringens Type B, C and D-septicum-tetani bacterin-toxoid. I have no idea what any of that means!! It is for cattle and sheep. The indications are for the vaccination of cattle and sheet against diseases casued by Cl. Chauvoei (blackleg), Cl. Haemolyticum (bacillary hemoglobinuria), Black disease or infectious necrotic hepatitis, lamb dysentery, hemorrhagic enterotoxemia and tetanus.

The dose says for sheep initial doese 4 ml SQ then 2 SQ. Please tell me this makes sense to you. The vet said this amount for both babies and moms. I am so afraid that the vets around here just don't know about goats and they just treat them like sheep. Is that okay?

Again, thanks!

You need to give about 4 cc of the oxytet you are using. It is only half the strength of LA 200. You can milk a bit like you are doing to see if she stays in milk. Also observe teh kids to be sure they are acting like they are getting enough to eat. Hopefully she will be on the mend very soon.

I have her .6cc of Banamine and 2 cc of Oxytet. She weighs 57lbs. I will give her the triple antibiotic in her eyes too. I have moved her to another stall with her babies and so far she still has milk. Can I just test her by milking her a bit to make sure she doesn't dry up? That's what I did. I received your medicine list and I have almost everything recommended....I am so thankful for that now as this happened after vet hours.

Thank you Maggie. I really appreciate your thoughfulnes to devote so much time to helping out our goats!

For this strength oxytet you need to give 1 cc per 7 kg. You can give it SQ instead of IM, the goat will really appreciate it. Many drug companies have not gone through the expense to be able to relabel their drugs for both IM and SQ use, it is safe to give SQ though. Still give it for 5 days. Most of these meds are labeled for cattle and sheep, goats have a much higher metabolism and often need a higher dose to maintain effective levels.

If you have a triple antibiotic eye ointment use that 2 (or more) times a day. This seems to make the eye feel better and speeds healing. Be careful, you can get pinkeye, wash carefully after treating.

She definitely has some sort of infection (likely pneumonia) along with probable pinkeye. Check the inner eyelids and surface of the eyeball. With pinkeye the membranes will be very red and irritated looking, her eyes will be very sore.

To help treat both give oxytetracycline (LA 200 or Biomycin 200) at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection once a day until the eyes clear or for at least 5 days (for the pneumonia). To help with the fever you can give banamine at 0.1 cc (one tenth of a cc) per 10 pounds once a day for 2 to 3 days. Or if you don't have banamine you can use liquid Children's Motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds orally every 4 to 6 hours.

Be prepared to bottle feed the kids. With a high temp her milk may dry up. There is a good homemade recipe on the Articles page.

Put her and her kids in a pen by themselves where she can get water, hay and feed without having to fight for it or look for it.
