Whatever this is, you should take extreme caution when handling it. Use sterile technique and make sure you dispose of all contents of the abscess and any disposables touching it. It is best to perform this procedure in a controlled area where you can sterilize the location and control the animal. There is no reason to remove the animal from the herd unless there is a chance it will contaminate the herd with the contents of the abscess. The "CL?" is contained within the abscess and if you remove it and clean everything you are okay. I would suggest "Veterinary Guide for Animal Owners". Look under abscesses on page 114. I have performed this procedure and believe me the goat will not enjoy it. I use Listerine to clean out the wound and burn everything afterward. I cannot emphasize enough the need for sterile field and procedure. One other thing, before performing this cutdown of the abscess you should draw out some contents with a needle to make sure you are not dealing with a hematoma. Actually goats are very forgiving and do not carry a grudge. Bon Chance}

Yes, it's right on the jaw bone. It's about the size of a golf ball and the hair on it is starting to come off. We ended up cutting it open Friday and a bunch of yellow thick puss came out of it. A vet told me it's probably CL and all we can do is keep her out of the herd and treat her whenever they pop up. We now have to keep her kids out too though which is hard.We're doing a blood test tomorrow to make sure that's what it is. Is it really necessary to keep them seperate if the boils aren't open or anything?

Ainslee, I haven't kept up lately - where are you from since you have cactus? I'm in Arizona and they can get thistles and cactus stuck in them. I've had some get cysts and not that other disease that people are afraid of infecting their herd, because I have had the ones that had the cysts for about 9 years and none of my newer ones from the last 2 years ever got it.

If you want, email me directly since we are kind of dealing with same types of climate, area, etc.

Is it under the jaw? Is it kind of soft and jiggly? It might be bottle jaw, which is caused by worm overload. Others on here can help you with worming if that's what it is.

Yesterday at feeding time I noticed a huge knot on the jaw of one of our registered does. None of the others seem to have one, but it looks terrible. Is there something we're supposed to do for it?Or just wait and see if it goes down on its own? We have a lot of cactus they all seem to get their faces stuck in,so i didn't know if maybe she just did that and it swelled up. We're new to this so please someone help!
