Feed 4 times a day pretty much as much as they want until 7 to 8 weeks old then every week or so reduce the number of feedings by one and leave them a bit hungry each time to encourage them eating solid food. I wean from the bottle at about 16 weeks (4 months). Most calf milk repalcers have soy protein which goats don't digest very well. Use the homemade recipe, straight 4% cows milk or cow's milk with some buttermilk added. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

This is the receipe for a homemade milk replacer that is listed on the articles page. It is mentioned on this forum by several breeders who swear by it. You might want to give it a try. 1 gallon milk (homogenized) 1 can evaporated milk 1 cup buttermilk Take the gallon of milk, and pour out about 1/3...set aside Pour into the gallon, 1 can evaporated milk, and 1 cup buttermilk..... then pour to the top of the gallon of milk what you set aside. |

After seeing your latest post Randall, could it be acidiosis. Could they have overloaded on the the creep feed, creating a deadly toxic condition. Symptoms are as you described along with painful bloat. There are treatments for minor cases if caught early. I seen most recommendations on the 'Ivermectin for Cattle' dosage at 1cc/25lbs orally for goats. And to get an effective treatment, give 2 days in a row. I use Purina Calf milk replacer without any problem. Only thing is if you mix milk replacers a bit too rich it will cause diarrhea. I also make the solution of about 10% whole cow milk which seems to be more soothing to the kid's gut. I start worming the kids at about 7 or 8 weeks old, after they start eating on vegitation real well. On them I use Valbazen or Ivomec, single dose. Sorry about your loss of the does. I had a similar misfortune in the past on a grain overload. |

What breed goats, what was their weight? Ivermectin is extremely safe to use but they may have had just too great a parasite load. Were lower eyelids white from anemia? I would give the kids just plain cows milk from grocery with a little buttermilk added. They do fine on this with no scouring. I know some of the replacers can cause digestive upset especially if they contain soy products, avoid those. Do the kids have diarrhea? If so you might want to treat for coccidiosis, or do it anyway as a preventative. You can use albon or sulmet or others for cocci. |
