Oh yeah, selenium deficiency. It is never too late to give BoSe to the does they are deficient too. The dose is usually 1 cc per 40 pounds SQ. You will have to dose the kids too I give my pygmy kids 1/3 cc the first week and if that doesn't do it give another dose the next week and maybe a third. I also splint the legs it really helps them to get around. I give BoSe injections twice a year to ALL of my goats (it affects fertility quite a bit so it is important for your bucks too). Selenium is often highly regulated by the government and many minerals do not have enough even when they put in the most allowed by law. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

okay, so I haven't given any of my nannies the BoSe injections. I have read about it and thought that I had to give it a month or so prior to kidding. My nannies are all due starting now. Is it too late? How much would I give per pound to the moms. They do get a specific goat mineral/vitamin mix made for goats in our area but saw that you mentioned to someone else about the zinc and copper amounts and this mineral has 3663 mg/kg zinc and 506 mg/kg. It has Selenium added at 11.5 mg/kg. the Vitamin E is 1291 IU/kg. I have to admit, these numbers mean nothing to me! I searched and searched for proper minerals for them and thought that this was the best I could find. I really want to do things right. Thanks again Maggie Karey |

This is usually due to selenium deficiency. Give 1/4 to 1/2 cc BoSe (a selenium and Vitamin E injectable supplement you get from a vet) by Sq injection. It usually take a week or so to see improvement. Until then you can splint the legs to help him get around and to prevent permanent contractions. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Hi Maggie, First I should tell you that the nanny with the hernia is doing fine so far. My vet has advised to hold off on the hernia operation as she fears it will just herniate again when she is in labour. She is definately due as her udder is really big. Now, another one of my first timers had a sweet little billy on Saturday morning. They both seem fine except the billy's front legs aren't straight. In horses, we would suspect contrated tendons. Is there anything I can do for him? He gets around okay nad is eating well. I will go out and take a picture and post it in a few minutes. Thanks again Maggie. Karey |
