Thanks for your help Maggie, I really appreciate it. I will keep an eye on here for other problems.

Some newly freshened goats have hormone issues that cause unusual hair loss. Also if she was really "goopy" after kidding this can cause the skin on the tail to become irritated and for her to lose most of the hair. I have seen my does lose the tail hair like you describe but grow it back a month or so later when their hormones straightened out.

Your speaker was right about many goat feeds still not having enough copper.

Watch her for other changes such as very dark urine. Look at her eye membranes for signs of jaundice (yellowing) indicating liver problems which may mean copper toxicity. But it sounds like she is just going through some postpartum hormone issues.

Maggie,
I have a 5 yr old nubian doe who just freshened 2 weeks ago and is milking a gallon a day, that has lost most of the hair on her tail, the very tip of the tail still has hair and there is a very thin strip down the center on top of the tail that still has hair. Her gums are purple, instead of bright pink. We are feeding a 20% goat ration at the rate of 1 1/2-2lbs per doe a day. Last fall, after attending a seminar on goats, we bought copper pills and gave to all the goats, because the vet that put the seminar on said most feeds do not have enough copper for goats. The entire herd was wormed about 1 month ago with ivermectin, at the rate of 1cc per 25lbs. In the eight yrs we have raised goats I have never seen anything like this. Any and all information will be appreciated.
