Maggie, I am on my way to the vet to get thiamin. My Vitamin B complex only has 12.5 of thiamin. How much thiamin should I give her? I will start her on pen G.Look forward to your response. |

Are you giving at least 1 cc per 20 pounds? Make sure it has at least 100 mg/ml of thiamin. Be sure it is not expired and wasn't left in the barn to freeze or get too hot. Start treating for listeria too by giving penicillin at 1 cc per 15 pounds 4 times a day for the first day or 2 then twice a day for 5 more days. Be sure she is at least drinking, dehydration will make her much worse. If she can swallow drench her with water or an electrolyte solution (recipes can be found on the articles page). She needs about 1/2 gallon a day. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I just went out this morning to check on them and feed and the doe is much worse. What else can I do? She had approx. 4 injections of B complex yesterday and 1 already this morning. She falls down and can't get up. Any ideas? Thanks Dawn |

Watch the others for an unsteady gait, a touch of "lameness", an unfocused balank look or slightly twitching eyes. If you catch it at this stage it is much easier to treat. it doesn't hurt the goat to give thiamin and better safe than sorry. Polio often strikes only one in the herd for unknown reasons. It is not at all contagious as it is not caused by a particular bacteria or virus. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Do I need to worry about my other goats? Thank you, I knew you would let us know. Dawn |

Yes it is likely polio. You may want to give the Fortified B every 2 to 3 hours to start. Don't worry it is very hard to overdose. She has had a slight case for a couple of days it looks like. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I have a mini-lamacha doe that hasn't been eating like she usually does, and I just figured it had to do with the sore mouth. I noticed yesterday she was holding her right back leg way out when she urinated and thought maybe her kidd injured it alittle while nursing. This morning she is sort of stumbling around drunk like but not terribly. I am going to go ahead and treat with fortified vitamin B complex for polio but I am not sure that is what it is. Can anyone clue me in as to what I should do? Thanks in advance, everyone on here is so great!} |
