He would be suddenly and incredibly lame if he had a cracked bone. LA 200 is an injectable antibiotic, the active ingredient is oxytetracycline. You can get it at most feed stores. Store it at air conditioned room temperature out of the light. Be sure to buy syringes and needles (20 gauge 1 inch needles work great). Do not give oxytetracycline orally!

I 'll check tomorrow and hope that is what it is. I was thinking he might have a cracked bone somewhere. What's LA 200 and where can I get it?

Wet feet can hurt and hoof rot certainly is a problem when the feet stay wet. Check carefully between the toes and around the top of the hoof. If the feet have a "rotten" odor that can indicate foot rot too.

You can give LA 200 every other day at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection for 3 treatments for hoof rot and if you find he has infection between his toes you can squirt a bit of LA 200 right on the spot. Having a place for him to be dry is essential.

I think his hooves are very "spongy" does that mean anything? I mean the sole is spongy. I will check more in the a.m.
thanks

It is an anti-inflammatory and a pain killer. It can be VERY hard on the digestive system causing ulcers, even when given by injection. Use only for a few days and if possible only give it once a day at that.

Look between the toes around the dew claws and around the coronary band at the top of the hoof. Feel for heat in the feet which may indicate founder. Are the hooves normal?

Interesting! I have not found anything so far that would make this buck limp so badly. There is no swelling and short of X-rays (which are too costly for me right now), I don't know what to think. I have isolated him (he is strangely appreciative), and I gave him a dose of banamine to see if this would help by morning. Question? Is banamine an anti inflamatory or is it just a pain killer?
thanks

Trim the foot closely looking for pockets between the hoof wall and soft tissue. If he has a pocket trim it out and use strong bleach solution to kill the bacteria causing hoof rot.

If his knees joints are swollen and painful it could be CAE.

I have a 1 1/2 yr. old nigerian buck. He is very well muscled and very healthy EXCEPT very slowly (starting with his right foot/let?) he has gotten lame. This a.m. he really did not want to get up even to come get his grain!
Any thoughts?
