She has been up, nibbling at hay and some of the grass/weedy stuff around the pen. She did, as far as we can tell, drop the remains of the placenta from the 2nd kid. She did drink a gallon of warm water with 1/2 bottle of molasses after giving birth and is drinking water. She's not producing milk though. She has barely 1/8 of a cup in her yesterday. This morning she had a scant 6 ounces. This morning she did nibble at the sweet feed, but grazed more on the greenery and hay. She doesn't seem quite as swollen today either. The owners have been giving her propolyene glycol 2x a day. I don't know if they conveyed the correct info to the vet, even. The Mom thought the 2 first timers had mastitis because they had very little milk to start and their udders seemed huge! I managed to convince her it was the muscle part of the udders, as they're now milking nicely. Thanks for your help. |

You can put her on penicillin at 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection twice a day for 5 days. Did dhe pass the placenta? Can she stand up? Is she drinking or eating hay? You might try giving Goat Nutridrench twice a day to see if that helps increase appetite. Does she have a full udder? Are the kids nursing? Is she being milked? Sometimes massaging in a downward petting motion or gently bumping the udder like a kid will help her let her milk down. Warm compresses may help. Oxytocin (in small doses) is sometimes given to cattle to let the milk down but it has to be given every time, and this is only available from a vet. If she is being milked be sure to use proper technique. Do not milk by pinching and pulling the fingers down the teat stretching it. This is painful and the goat will not release her milk. To mik properly close the crook of the thumb at the top of the teat and then close the fingers going down the teat one by one, pushing the milk out. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

A first time Toggenburg had 2 kids 2 days ago. The first was a blockheaded boy, which she had a little trouble with. It also presented with only 1 front foot. Mom screamed when she was finally able to pass his head on out. There are a couple of small tears visible. What antibiotics does she need. She's also not eating grain, nor producing colostrum/milk. I know there's a shot to let down her milk, but don't remember the name of it. This is a 4-Her's show goat. What else can be done less expensively, than a trip to the Vet??? Thanks. |
