Give Naxcel at 1 cc per 50 pounds by SQ injection twice a day. Double the first dose. Coughing could be due to lungworms, does the goat have a fever or any other symptoms? Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

The Fiasco Farm website at http://fiascofarm.com/goats/medications.htm#oxytetracycline gives this dose. Goat Medicine By Mary Smith, DVM recommends once daily dosing of oxytetracycline in many diseases, especially respiratory disease and listeriosis. The Merck Manual recommends once daily dosing of oxytetracycline for ruminants. When used to prevent abortion (caused by chlamydia) it is often given every 2 to 3 days for a total of three doses. With bacteria becomeing more and more resistant to so many drugs I tend to go with a higher dose or a more frequent dose. Having done the every 2 to 3 day dosing and the dialy dosing and losing less goats when giving oxytet daily I tend to recommend daily dosing. This would probably leave too high a residue in goats going to slaughter and extra time over the recommneded withdrawal time is probably needed. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thank you for your advice. but every thing i have read for la200 says use only every three days. Is there a web site where it says use la200 in goats daily? I'm going to worm them today via oral ivermectin. thanks lisa |

Go ahead and deworm with ivermectin. Use the Injectable for Cattle and Swine and give 1 cc per 25 pounds but give it orally (do both goats). Repeat in 2 weeks. This drug is safe for stressed goats. LA 200 should be given daily to goats at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection to be the most effective. They have a much higher metabolism and the drug is quickly excreted from their system. It would have worked alot faster if it had been given at the start of symptoms, especially if the mucus was yellow or green and thick, if the goat had a fever over 104, or if it was off feed. Waiting just lets the bacteria get a better hold. Glad to know the goat is doing better and seems to be getting over it. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I purchased 2 boer doeS FROM A Purebred auction on april 20 they came down with coughing and mocous discharge from nose after they were home for a couple of days. I waited a week or so to see if it was just stress. One got better the other just went doen hill. So I shot her up with la 200 she seemed to worsen. So i asked my co worker who is a vet. And gave another la 200 after the 3 days and gave sub q fluid 1000ml and probiotic paste. And waited 3 more days. the moucous nose has stop. She coughs small amounts eating and driking ok. So yesterday I gave another la 200 and sub q fluids lactated ringer 1000ml I will see if this does it. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANYMORE SUGGUSTION FOR MY DOE. I WAS THINK ABOUT WORMING BUT I DIDN' T WANT TO INTRODUCE MORE STRSS. |
