You should have the option to tattoo your premise number in one ear and an individual animal ID number in the other. Individual ID numbers usually indicate the year of birth and the birth sequence. Like 2006 is indicated by the letter W, So the first kid born is W1, the second is W2 and so on. The combination of the 2 tattoos gives each goat a unique ID number and is easily traceable. Check with the registry to find out if a tattoo number is the same as a tag number. I would think it should be. Our registry (National Pygmy Goat Association) and most dairy goat registries only accept tattoo numbers (or microchips), never tags. Gary has also started a registry for "pet" goats that may help with giving your goats an ID so you won't have to use a tag. Registered goats don't need tags if they are tattooed or microchipped with the ID on their registry papers. They do have to travel with their papers or a copy of their papers...You can find more info on this on another page on Goatworld, I'm sure. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

One more question...What if I'm selling them as show wethers? They are not registerable and from what I understand I must use a scrappie tag on anything that leaves my place. Not very familiar with show goats. Can we just tattoo everything instead of tagging if they are going to be sold, registered or not? Also when we registered some of our does they asked for a tag number would that just be the tattoo number? Cindy

Maggie, if I wanted to take tags out of the ears of the little kids I bought, would it be too difficult? I bought the kids and they already had them, but I don't like them. I'd love to remove them! Falla Falla's Lush Acres Dairy

You don't need to tag at all if you aren't selling them or until you sell them. If they are going to be tattooed and registered they don't need tag EVER. Show animals are never tagged. Because of the way goats browse eartags often tear out. They often become very infected as they are constantly being pulled on by the other goats. Wait as long as possible and use the smallest tag you can. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

When is the best time to tag our little ones ears. We only have 16 and we know who belongs to who so that's not a problem. Just wondering when is best for them? Cindy
