You should isolate her the wound is still draining potentially infectious pus.

You can not legally have in your possession nor administer any sedative, tranquilizer or anesthetic drug. They are all regulated narcotics.

Goats can be very sensitive to tranquilization, the way you handled this was probably the best way. Even your vet would have done it this way, maybe giving a local nerve block, maybe not.

I noted that the cyst had lost hair on the surface so couldn't wait for the vet. I tied her horns to a wall and held her body with mine and opened the cyst with a knife, horizontaly. I will do it vertically next time. Anyway, as I expected, the pus poured out. I squeezed the contents onto paper towels which we burned later. I purged the wound with Listerine and cleaned it thoroughly. I used the Vets guide book for tips. I would appreciate knowing if anyone has access to any kind of sedative for goats. She did not like this at all and both goat and owner could easily get wounded in the process. I used sterile technique learned by my 25 years of hospital experience and she seems to be healing well. She is not isolated.

The vaccine can cause a cyst at the site of the injection. Let us know what you find out.

This cyst has appeared after we had given their CD/T's on April 22. I noted in Gail Bowmans book that the CD/T vaccine can cause lesions. I will still pursue the CL trail with our vet but the possibility of this bacterial infection seems remote to us. We are recovering a 10 year dormant farm that has not had livestock in that period of time. The herd has free range of a truly lush overgrown 85 acres. More tomorrow. thanks

This is one of the most common sites for a CL (caseous lymphadenitis) abscess. And likely this is an abscess. If you raise and sell breeding stock then it might be best to have this examined by a vet and a sample of the pus taken for culture. This way you will know if you have CL in your herd and you can formulate a plan from there. CL is highly contagious and incurable and causes abscesses at the site of lymph nodes both internally and externally.

One of our Boer does, 15 months, has a tennis ball sized swelling just under her left ear. It does not seem to bother her but would like your thoughts.
