I would be surprised if she DOESN'T have a big parasite problem. The pelleted dewormer doesn't work well in the south and she wasn't using it nearly often enough...If she was also underfeeding minerals (especially copper) its a big double whammy. I found my best defense against parasites has been adequate copper. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

She wormed all her goats yesterday with the Ivermectin orally so if it's the bots hopefully it will take care of itself. Anything else you think it might be? The skinny doe with the swollen neck and face is no longer swollen. Don't know if it was the Ivermectin or coincidence. It sounds like to me she has a pretty big parasite problem....??? |

Is it bleeding from the nostrils? Goats can get nasal bots (a parasite in the nose), she could have a sinus infection causing her to bleed from the nose. Deworming with Ivermectin Injectable for Cattle at 1 cc per 25 pounds should take care of nasal bots. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Another one of my sister's pregnant goats (due any day)has a bloody nose. It's been this way for a couple of days. It's not a constant running of blood but every time she goes out there it is bloody. She can't see any injury or sore in or around her nose to be causing it. Help! |

The mineral needs to be out all the time, the goats visit frequently. I would still say bottle jaw and/or an abscess now too. Goats don't get cancer very often adn certianly not something that pops up this fast! If the minerals are for sheep and goats then they REALLY don't have enough copper....Please check the copper level, many feed companies are still formulating feed for both sheep and goats under the incorrect assumption that since they are close to the same size they are the same animal (goats are hairy sheep...NOT!). Sheep are very sensitive to copper while goats need as much copper or even a bit more copper than cattle. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Maggie, My sister was just out in the barn and there's a huge mass (baseball size) on the doe's head/neck where her tyroid is. Any ideas on this?? Could it be cancer. She'll pick up the wormer tomorrow when she's in town and try in the mean time. She said she feeds the loose mineral two times a day. Not sure on the cooper level. |

The swollen face is bottle jaw a symptom of severe worm infestation. It means she is so anmeic the fluid from her blood is leaking out of the blood vessels. The pelleted dewormer is not very effective and if used correctly needs to be given quite frequently! Deworm all of the goats with Ivomec Injectable for Cattle and Swine, give it orally at 1 cc per 25 pounds for 2 days and repeat in 2 weeks. This drug is very safe, even at 25 times this dose, you must be absolutely sure to give enough, go over what you think she needs. You can give geritol liquid at the adult does twice a day to help rebuild ehr iron. This doe is in a critical, lifethreatening situation. If the mineral don't have enough copper goats are very susceptible to parasites. Please be sure the mineral is a loose mineral, offered free choice at all times and has 900 to 1500 ppm copper. Copper deficiency would explain her poor hair coat. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

My sister has a Nubian goat that is very skinny. Each summer she seems to gain the weight back but after the winter she's skinny skinny again. She loses her hair and has a weird funny undercoat. All her goats are in a nice barn with an outside pen for the Spring/Summer and out of the elements in the winter. Fed hay, grain, minerals twice a day. She dewormed her last fall with pellet wormer several times as instructed but nothing since. This year the doe is pregnant and due anytime. This morning my sister said the doe's jaw, side of face, and neck was swollen. Could it be a thyroid problem???? |
