No, terramycin does not work for coccidia. Use a sulfa drug like Albon or Sulmet 12.5% drinking water solution. Give straight from the bottle as an oral drench, not in the drinking water at 1 cc per 5 pounds for 5 days. Do not use Corid for coccidia, it is not as effective anymore and can actually give the goat polio (a severe neurological disease). Goats cough, if he does not have a fever (over 104) he does not have an infection that an antibiotic will help. Goats seldom do much coughing with pneumonia anyway, that is a human thing... Goat do not utilize a mineral block well and most of them do not have enough copper or zinc for goats. Look for a loose mineral mix either one specifically for goats or one for beef cattle. Look for 900 to 1800 ppm copper and 3000 to 5000 ppm zinc. Anything labeled for sheep and goats will not have enough copper. Have the vet doa fecal exam for worms and coccidia. Treating the water probably did not do much for the coccidia and he is probably wormy too. For coccidia give a sulfa drug, Sulmet or Albon 12.5% drinking water solution (sold in most feed stores)and use 1 cc per 5 pounds for 5 days. Give it as it comes straight from the bottle. For worms use Ivermectin Injectible for Cattle and Swine give it ORALLY at 1 cc per 25 pounds. Be sure to give enough, it is very safe even at 25 times this dose. Sandi has great advice for the skin cruddies. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Sounds more like a fungus, like ringworm or dermatophilus. You can use a women's vaginal yeast medicine or athlete's foot medicine on him. You will need to treat for several weeks. You can get a miconazole rinse from the vet - I had one animal who had it completely covering his entire body - it was easier to pour the medicine on than try to dab it on a little at a time. He recovered, grew back all his hair and now is fine. If you do go to the vet, take some skin and hair scrapings, he can do a quick check under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis. Sandi |

We bought 2 goats about 1 month ago. One was a 5 month old buckling (he was bottle fed),about a week after we had him he got scours and we was told to put medicine in the water and we did, but now has sores(scabs with hair falling out) on his ears, front legs, around the mouth and nose, some under belly. Started noticing them on his ears first. He has plenty of grass to eat and we have been giving them goat feed, I also bought a mineral block for them. Oh yeah, they did have lice and we treated them for that with a powder. Haven't seen anymore on them. Could the powder done that or the scours? He is still extremly thin but eating well. What can I do for the sores and to get him heathly again? |
