Enterotoxemia (if that is what it is) is an intestinal infection that spreads to other organs. It is caused by a clostridial bacterial which occurs naturally in small numbers in the intestines. When the goat's digestive system does not work properly like for some reason it slows or stops the bacteria proliferate and release a toxin. This is what one gives the CDT vaccine for. But to protect a goat this young you should vaccinate the doe 4 to 6 weeks before kdding to get the maximum antibodies on the colostrum and you can give the newborns CD antitoxin at birth and again at 3 to 4 weeks (the antitoxin is effective immediately but only lasts 3 to 5 weeks or so) and then vaccinate at 8 to 10 weeks old. A vaccine does not work before then as the goat MUST have a functioning immune system to stimulate (this is what a vaccine does, stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies). A vaccine takes 3 to 4 weeks to give protection, is best if boosted at that time and give fairly long lasting protection.

You might try treating by giving penicillin at 1 cc per 15 pounds twice a day and CD antitoxin at the recommended dose (usually double the protective dose...)

You might try treating for Floppy Kid. This usually involves giving pepto bismol or baking soda solution to counter a metabolic acidosis. Giving the CD antitoxin and thiamin or Fortified B Complex is also recommended when treating for Floppy Kid.

You can find articles on several of these conditions on the Articles page.

Maggie,
His temp is normal. What is enterotoxemia? What causes it? So we are basically looking at death? Thank you for all your help.

This is probably enterotoxemia at this point and not much you can do. DOes he have a fever or is his temp below normal? Most kids are 102 to 103.

Maggie,
We have a 6 day old nubian buckling that from the begining hasn't been right. We bottle raise everything and this little guy would not eat for the first day. We use probios on two different occasions and he seemed to be doing better. He has never taken more than about 6 oz. at a feeding. He is getting week, to the point he won't stand and he has a mucus discharge from his mouth. This is something new to us. What if anything should we do?
