Hi Kerrie:
We have a Great Pyr and even though he has driven me completely nuts when he was in his "puppy chewing stage" I would not be without him! When we had the problem w/Bill E Jack last week he was right there for him. Bill E could not see, Ralph (the Great Pyr) guided him all over the place, followed him when he ventured into the woods or too far away, moved the other goats over so Bill E can eat at feeding time, and layed right w/him w/his head on his back. It was soo sweet! He keeps everyone in check, including the calf (or calves when we have more than one) There have been many more intances that if we did not have Ralph we would have definatly had trouble, Jessie would have hung herself because she got her head stuck in the fence up pretty high..Ralph stood there so she could stand on his back, and barked like crazy, we have coyottees like crazy around here, and people who just let their dogs run wild. Ralph even went bazerk one day when a chicken hawk attempted to get one of our chickens.
We were told when we first got Ralph not to let the kids play w/him as if he was a "family pet" he would not make a good LGD. Now since then we have learned different, because many people have LGD's who are also family pets. But we did not know better then, and did what we were told, so Ralph is not much of a family pet, he will not go and play w/the kids etc, but that is ok, we already have the family pet dog. I really did not want another dog, but to be honest I could not sleep at night if he was not out there w/the animals.
A friend of mine have both Llamma's and great pyr. I know there are other types of dogs you can use as an LGD, and I am sure others will let you know. We have good fencing, and hot wire around a lot of it, but I still would not be without Ralph.
