Hi Gary and Leah:
Nope I really do not think it is the mountain laurel. We had a problem w/it last year and the symptoms are not the same. As I mentioned I contacted Goat 911 and Judy contact me via email, what a wonderful person!!
Anyway she seems to think Goat Polio or Listeria. Bill E Jack is partially paralized in his hind end, and seems to be blind, and very lathargic, head shaking to the left and his eyes seem to blink w/his pulse if that makes any sense. This came on so sudden. He also seems to be breathing heavy, but no sign of him being in pain.
As per Judy's suggestion I am giving him shots of B Complex and Penicillin, and of course pro bios. After the shot of the Pen he seemed to try and get up and move around..
When it was feeding time, he did try to get over to the feed bin, which is way on the other side.. He still seems "out there" which is the best way I can put it. He is not dragging his hind end as much as he was at the begining, but he is having a hard time manuvering it. Seems that his front legs are fine.
I just do not know how this could have happened. The only change in their diet is now since we have opened up the rest of the pasture/woods area to them, we are only feeding them once per day, verses twice per day. You know the goat chow we use, and no mold is in it. The only thing I thought of is maybe he got into the calves gluten corn mixture and it had mold, but I Checked the bin and I did not see any..unless it is mold I cannot see. Usually the gluton corn mixture will have white on it if there is mold present.
The rest of the goats seem fine. I have to say, that even though sometimes I just want to wring my great pyr's neck, he is very worried about Bill E Jack. He has been with him every step of the way "guiding him", and laying by him and watching him like a hawk..Remmeber I mentioned these two are "big buds" anyways (smile) I am so proud of him!
Anyways, we are leaving for vacation tomorrow afternoon, so I am hoping I see some sort of improvement tomorrow, and not a turn for the worse. I will be thinking about him all night!! My father in law will be coming over to check on a feed the animals and give Bill E Jack his shots..Say a prayer for him guys..
