In Reply to: Q&As about Chronic Wasting Disease - (article) posted by GoatWorld on July 02, 2002 at 21:10:46:
Hi folks,
I was always under the impression that goats were susceptible to Chronic Wasting Disease - at least a form of it. But apparently, according to the TAHC article and to another article which states:
"Other ruminant species, including wild ruminants and domestic cattle, sheep, and goats, have been housed in wildlife facilities in direct or indirect contact with CWD-affected deer and elk. No cases of CWD or other TSEís have been detected in these other ruminant species. There is ongoing research to further explore this possibility."
So apparently goats may not be susceptible to CWD.
One thing I have noticed from reading upon other diseases such as CAE and CL, a "form" of chronic wasting occurs. It would be interesting to hear more studies on this because if CWD is not a threat to goats as it is to deer and elk, then we need to know about the form that does affect goats in relationship with the disease(s) they may have.
Best regards,
Gary
