Hi folks,
This past Sunday was one of those days when I was suddenly concerned about my goats health. I was sitting in the house working on a computer for a friend when my wife asked me if I wanted a peach. Sure I told her, took the peach and didn't really think much more about the other peach she had in her hand. I presumed it was for her.
A few minutes later she came in and told me she had fed the peach to our biggest billy - was it okay for him to have the pit too? Oh No! I thought, remembering that "stone" fruits are a no-no, mainly because of the "cyannic" toxins involved with things like the leaves, stems...the dang pit!
Apparently while feeding the peach to him, he got greedy and grabbed the part of the peach with the pit and before she could do anything, he had chomped it up pretty good and it was down the hatch. Well my first thought was baking soda, Milk of Magnesia and mineral oil. But instead, I went out to check on him, figuring if he was going to show signs of poisoning, it would be rather soon.
Well, lo and behold, no signs of poisoning. He was busy munching away on some tree leaves and other forbs in our woods. So it looks like one peach pit did no harm (hopefully). I'll bet he has some pretty sore teeth from cracking and chewing that thing though. I just cannot understand how they are able to grind food so good. Hurts my teeth just to think about it.
Anyway, just thought I'd pass that little story along. The moral of the story if there is one: if you're going to feed em' peaches, make sure to take the pit out!
Best regards,
Gary
