False Pregnancy??

Midwest Buck Sale 12cc Syringe

Posted by Leah on June 15, 2002 at 10:41:13:

Hi,

I have a yearling, would-be first freshener, that is
really keeping me guessing. I didn't keep a buck last
fall, so I had to take her to be bred. The first time
didn't take. So, when her cycle came due again, I
took her and left her for one week.

Not knowing the exact date of breeding, I anticipated
she would kid sometime between the 8th and the 15th of
this month. About six weeks ago, she starting "making
her udder" and within the past week, I have noticed
only a slight softening of her ligaments. But other
than that, nothing. She doesn't really look pregnant,
in fact she is quite thin. I've tried feeling for
kids, but have only felt one or two little blips that
may be kids or may be digestion.

So, I am left to assume that she is in fact, not
pregnant. My question is, how common is it for false
pregnancies to occur in young does that have never
kidded before? Since her udder is filling, should I
try milking her? Has anyone else had a similar
experience?

Thanks for your help!
