Mary it's a good question. Hay gets hot when it gets wet you have to be carefull with it. It's probally not such a big deal when it's out on the floor but if it's baled and it's wet it can get so hot it will burn. We had a bale 2yrs ago that was so hot to touch you had to wear gloves and still stop unrolling it every few minutes, it was even to hot to stand next to with jeans on. But anyway I don't belive wet hay that is used for bedding can start a flame but it will scald because of the heat. I use shavings with straw over the top of that. Dalice has said that just shavings can contribute to mastitis, of course non of us want that.
