Hi gang,
It looks like everyone is taking their Memorial Day vacation as no one is on the list. I just had to share anyhow....if anyone is listening or not.: )
Friday afternoon our old nineteen +/- cow had her calf. I had been sleeping in the motor home next to her pen at night closely watching her, I just had a feeling she would have trouble. I knew she was in labor, up and down a lot, but thought it would be awhile yet. I went to get a lawn chair and some ice tea to relax while I watched. When I came back I saw two legs sticking out of the old cow while she nonchalantly walked around her pen looking for something to eat. She thought her job was over. I am freaking out thinking, front or back legs? Where is the head? Old Miss Liberty would not cooperate so I had to have my 11 yr. old son help hold her while I went in to see what position the calf was in. This is the first time I have ever been in a uterus. I have mini goats so I never get past two fingers with them. I found we had rear legs, I found the little tail and said we gotta pull. The cow never pushed anymore. I had always heard only pull when they push, well shoot she wasn't pushing!!!!!! I pulled with all my might and then had to have Jeffie help. He grabbed one leg, I the other and we pulled and prayed, and prayed and pulled. Finally the calf came out and when it did, the old cow fell in a heap in the corner of the fence with her neck twisted back. I was afraid she was going to suffocate so I told Jeffie to rub the calf and I had to take the fence down to get the cow unstuck. Got her out and up and then back to working on the calf. She was gurgly from coming out backwards, but after some postural drainage, and sticking a straw up her nose to make her sneeze several times, she came around. Cow and heifer are doing ok now, although we are seriously considering retiring old Miss Liberty. We named her baby Mabel and she is a cutie. What an exhausting day. Sorry to tell you all about a cow, but my mini cow list are a bunch of snobs so I no longer go there! Dalice
