We looked out the window this morning, and all of the goats were out in the field, Eris too..then about an hour later I looked out and all were out except Eris. I went out to the goathouse and there she was, with one leg hanging out of her. I stayed out a while with her, and tried looking to see if I could see the other one, and nope..then came out the little nose..but still only one hoof and part of the leg. So I called the vet..Of course he was in w/a patient, so the nurse said he would call me right back, and said that the other leg might be hung up somewhere. So about 15 minutes later, here is the head, just and only one leg again, and part of the shoulder. I quick got back on the phone w/the vet..this time putting Mike on the phone (thank goodness that he was home today)..While on the phone w/the vet he was trying to reach for the other hoof, but it was just too tight of a fit, she was screaming by this time..he tried everything the vet told him to do, push the kid back in etc..the kid was still holding on though, breathing. Finally he said to bring her in. So in the back of the truck w/Eris was Michael and I was driving w/Zak in the cab with me. I am driving down the road..my nerves are shot by this time I am smoking cigaretts like a crazy..and just shaking..then in flies a wasp..down my shirt..ohhh noo..then comes out the bottom of my shirt then into my shoe..so here I am driving down these mountain roads trying to take off my shoe while this wasp is stinging me..uggg..and the 20 min to the vet..seemed like 2 hrs. Finally we get there, and the vet tries to get the other leg, but could not..So Eris had a C-Section. The baby was at this time starting to get a little blue. but still breathing..What seemed like another 2 hrs past..Mike was in the operating room w/the vet, and I stayed outside w/Eris. Finally I could hear the little guy screaming, and she brought the little guy out to us to hold while the sewed up Eris. He was so hungry trying to suck on anything.
To top things off, Eris was disbudded when she was little, but I guess it was not a very good job because little nubs grew back..so one of the little nubs broke clean off while she was struggling, while she was still under, the vet burned off the other one..so she looks like a mess..black burn marks on the top of her head..and stitched all the way..
She is still lathargic. We took them both home. The little guy can't seem to find her teat..he is standing up for a little bit and walking one or two steps..but also sleeping I am sure the gas they used to knock Eris out, has a lot to do w/that. But 2 hrs went by and he did not eat..that is when I milked about 2 oz of colostrum from her, and fed it to him. He was so stuck, they could not get him out after they cut Eris opened either. So his tounge is a little swollen becasue when they pulled him, he was biting down on it..so that might be why he cannot suck that good..becasue w/the bottle he is having a little bit of a hard time too. Now Wes just came in and said he was drinking off of her..so that is a good sign..
Anyway, I mixed up this mixture of sugar, salt and baking soda and tepid water for Eris, I saw an article on goatworld that after giving birth you should give this to the doe..so she has been drinking it. She can't or wont sit down yet..The poor thing, I feel so horrible..and I am still shaking. I am going out to take a pic in just a few minutes and I will post it. Wes is so happy to have his little goat. He is adorable. Looks exactly like a boer (minus the ears) Wes wants to name him Nicholas. Needless to say Mike is not a happy camper $303.00!! but we had no choice, I mean if Mike was not home, I would have had to have had the vet come here..and god knows how long that would have taken and we might not have been able to save the little guy.
Keep them in your prayers..I will post a pic in a bit
~H..."now can I have that vaalum??"
So everyone keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer that this little guy will make it. The vet seems to think he will be ok..
