Hi folks,
In one of the posts below someone mentioned an idea of donating to the Rabies Vaccination Project at Cornell University through GoatWorld. While I am open to the idea, I am also a bit skeptical in asking for donations since over the last couple of months I have had to implement the paid membership for the Message Forum. I hate to keep asking people for money and all that as that isn't what I had ever intended to do with GoatWorld.
But here are a few thoughts to ponder and I'll let the majority decide. I'm thinking that perhaps early next year (late January - February), we could establish a benefit auction or donation fund specifically for that purpose. If we went about it that way, I'd want to get a t least one or two people involved directly with the handling of the donated funds - sort of a check and balance so people won't think that money is going solely to me. I think the best way would be to set up a PayPal account where donations/paid for items could be directly deposited and then transferred to the Rabies Vaccination Project. I'd also be willing to contribute a percentage of any sales made on GoatWorld - maybe an idea here is that I could donate a dollar or two of every membership to the Message Forum. Something along those lines.
I know a few other goat sites have set up benefit auctions and such to help or support such and such. While I am not opposed to these per se, I think that charity often gets misappropriated and abused to the point that the donations do not go for what they are intended for (or at least the largest portion thereof).
So in any event, what I would prefer to do is get in touch with the Rabies Vaccination Project and discuss at length with them how to best serve their needs, and to make sure that any donations are going to be used as they state they are going to be used. I certainly would not want to donate to a project that says they are working on a goat vaccine and in reality it is a vaccine for sheep or other animals. This all of course depends upon how the majority of the GoatWorld Members feel about this venture. Just some food for thought.
