It may be a good idea to get ahold of your vet and get the rabies vaccine given "extra-label."
In our area - Connecticut, we have plenty of rabid critters, last year they shot 2 rabid foxes on our properity, someone called in to the cops that there was a fox out in daylight, sure enough it was showing the classic symptoms of "dumb" rabies (you either get dumb rabies when the animal is stumbling around, or "ferocious (sp?)" I think is the term for the more agressive behavior).
I always get all the animals done annually, and kids when they reach 3 months of age. For me, its worth spending the $10 a head knowing that I'm a little more protected. I don't believe that any goat that was given the vaccine and bitten has ever contracted the disease - its just a cost thing to get goats on the label. It takes alot of research and trials and a whole bunch of goats to get approval. Also, if your animal was to be bitten - chances are if you have the animal vaccinated and keep good records, they may avoid being destroyed.
Just my 2cents!
-Nat, who wants to get the people version of the rabies vaccine too! I work with so many animals at work that it would be nice to have one. All my full time co-workers have them, I feel left out.
