Hi Linda,
I'll try and add to some of the excellent information the others have posted. We have quite a mixed lot of goats but we are getting more into the Boer goats as well. Percentages in my opinion seem to do better health wise and have very nice dispositions. That's not to say that purebred Boers don't have nice temperaments - some of them do.
Some of my favorites to date have been the Boer - LaMancha crosses we've gotten in the last kidding cycle. Cute little kids that look like Boer goats only that they have no ears. We call them "LaBoers".
As per the market, we live ten miles from the Nixa Livestock Auction - a monthly goat and sheep auction. The demand is always high and if I remember correctly, the average for Boers and Percentages is usually anywhere from $0.85 to $1.15 a pound. Some they will sell by the head - most by weight. Whethers are always in demand as well. And of course, certain times of the year will yield a higher price. Hope this has been helpful.
Best regards,
Gary Pfalzbot
